I never roll. Put it into N, yank it, put it in 1 drive off.
How do they expect you to roll when you are stuck in a ditch? Yeah, it is good to roll so it gets aligned properly, but it is not a sin if you don't roll.
Just put back in Reverse, then Drive then N if it doesn't engage because of the aligned gears..
Go ahead, yank it!
I wouldnt shift your transmission through the gears if your transfer case is in neutral though...If you do that your trasmission will be spinning when your transfercase is not. If you dont make it into 4LO be sure to get back into 4HI before you put your tranny in gear. If for some reason if the transfercase gets stuck in Neutral you will either have to put your tranny in Neutral long enough for the gears to stop turning or you will have to shut off the engine with the tranny in gear then shift to Neutral. You just dont want you tranny output spinning at a different speed than your transfercase input while shifting the transfercase. You will know if it is though

BZZzzzzzzzzzCRUNCH!

Well, you got it opposite I think. You put the transmission in N (not selec trac) then put selec trac to 4LO, then engage gear into 1.
I don't see why any gears would be spinning. They will start once you pull from N to 1 (and since 4LO is already engaged) it will be easier. I do it all the time jumping the curb when someone parks behind me.

I was going with the scenario that the transfer case for whatever reason wouldnt go into gear...if that happens you dont want to put you tranny into gear or you could end up with some crunching if you tried to then put your transfer case into gear.
