The junkyard wants $800. Anyone have any better ideas? The rear differential I have is noisy but okay. I made a fish bowl out of it and didn't get the water out of it until it was too late. The person who will donate their sweat and blood towards the vehicle does not want to mess with the ring and pinion because of how fun it is.

So my option is buying a whole new rear if I don't want to listen to a hum at 45mph for the rest of the vehicle's life.

HELP!

When you say whole new rear, How much of it do you want?

Just the pumpkin? axle tubes? Shafts?

What would be more along you likeing (other than free :P) for the cost?

I guess ultimately I only really need the pumpkin (with the gears of course), but i'm not sure if I have the tools necessary to put the tubes and shafts back together... I'll have to ask my stepfather if it's doable (he's the donator of the blood and sweat ;)) I was hoping to spend more like $400

You only probally need a rear end rebuild, get a master install kit for the 8.25 and have a shop replace all the bearing and seals, cost about $400 with the master install kit.I highly doubt your ring and pinion is shot, most likely just the bearings, the gears can take alot but the bearing get fried without proper lubrication.

Are the ring and pinion gears blue? Chunks missing? Grooves or pits in the gears? If not the gears are fine and the bearings are toast.
But you can get new gears for the 8.25 for about $180-$200 depending on place you get them, and will not cost anymore to install then doing the bearings.I highly doubt the center section is bad unless the bearings seiezed and took chucks out of it and the tubes will be fine unless they are bent but just getting water contamination will not do that.

I don't believe there are any chunks out of the gearing but I think there was some pitting/grooving (I'll need to double check that).

Well then get a new gear set($180-$200),master install kit($80-$120),and have a good shop replace them. Most shops charge about $250-$350 for gear installs so you'd be looking at $510-$660 to rebuild the rear end.

Now is the time to have that locker installed. If your going to spend the money, its not much more for the ARB

I could be a lot more than that. My rear axle was making a lot of noise. It turned out that it was the pinion bearings. They had to replace the pinion, pinion bearings, ring gear and they changed the carrier bearings as well.

tjkj2002,

If he had extended his breathers for the rear end, would that have prevented this? Helped? how did the water get in there anyway?

Beepbeep, you are not far from me and I happen to have a spare rear axle. It had about 50k miles on it when I swapped it for my built one with the 4.10s and ARB.

It is open with 3.73 gears. I can sell it to you for the $400 if you'd like since we can probably meet in the middle to save shipping. Let me know if you can find one elsewhere. If not, I'll part with the spare.

Well Gris I certainly appreciate that... the only reason i'd have to think about it is because it's open, but I realize I can't be too picky.

I'll PM you in a few days...

Thanks!

WoodysKJ,

I was only in water about up to the exhaust pipe when this happened. The reason? The breather hose had a gash in it about 1/2inch above the nipple on the rear.

I was so mad when I figured this out. The dealer apparently looked the truck over before selling it. I'm trying to figure out exactly what they looked at!! My front driveshaft CV was bad, now this.

I already extended the breather but it was my own fault for not looking at it sooner.

You would need to cut off the spring pads, shock mounts on the D44,then cut them off the 8.25 and reweld them on the D44 in the right place. Then there is the speedo issue since the KJ uses a sensor in the rear axle to operate the speedo and odometer(I'm working on that issue as we speak).

You probably only need new berings and seals problem is that requires seting gear lash stuff PITA
how ever as others have said you can buy a locker like a detroit and a master install kit wich should have every thing you need for
around $800 top end then you get it installed for $250-$350 and only spend that ($250-$350) for the locker
unless the R&P are shot wich I doubt but even then it is only $150 more for a new one and your whole rear end will be new like zero miles new
