For those of us not able to make the Big Bear trip with LOSTKJWEST (Rats) how about a trip?

A southern AZ trip is in order I'm thinking. Some ideas are-
Chiva Falls
Copper Creek
Josephine Canyon (backside of Madera Canyon)
What are some other ideas?

Let's plan a trip for Saturday 8/18/07. What's the consensus destination?

Well, Casey (o8k) and some others have been planning a run up Box Canyon of the Hassayampa over on the jeepkj site, he had posted a link to it in another thread but I think the mention of the August run got overshadowed by people warning about running Box Canyon/Martinez Cabin during monsoon season. The BCH run is scheduled for that same weekend (8/18 ). I'd really love to do something down south but with work the way it is right now I'm only available for sure on Sundays. I'll keep an eye on this post and see if I can make it. With the weather we've had up here the past week I'm starting to think BCH might be better in September.

I'm jonesing to get out, too. Need to try out the new tires.

I was even debating conducting a '4x4 101 class' at Saguaro Coves - as we discussed after the CK run.

We are off to Tahoe this weekend (no 'wheeling) for some R&R.

Sunday 8/19 is doable. I'd like to keep it down south this time so that leaves hassayampa out.

Yeah, the monsoons seem to be back, after many weak years. We had water in the Santa Cruz almost over the banks yesterday.

If the trail you end up choosing is stockable, we're up for it. Maybe add Gunsight Pass to the list?

[Besides, that'll give me a chance to give someone my $35]

All of the trails I mentioned are doable by stock vehicles. Where is gunsight pass, I'm not familiar with that?

well there's a scouting run this weekend forming to survey BCH, and surrounding wickenburg.... Get a better bead on the situation, Sept may be better indeed, we hope to gain somthing by looking into it a bit. Lots can change in a few weeks time too.... but at least we will get off road a bit this weekend HA!

Gunsight Pass is Helvetia Road from 83 around 10 miles south of I10 over to Santa Rita Road and eventually up Wilmot to Sahuarita.

[edit] Well, my map shows this road as a continuation of Wilmot intersecting Santa Rita, but I think it's really more of a power line right of way  . Anyway, it goes over to Santa Rita Road.

[update2] Josephine Canyon, is that BullSprings Road (FR143)? Or am I on the wrong side of the Santa Ritas?

Well, don't wait for me. As of this evening I just found out that one of the areas I work in will be going to OT both Saturdays and Sundays starting next weekend (we'd do it this weekend but they are doing a scheduled backup on our part tracking software - if it's offline we don't do squat). Since I'll be in Payson next Saturday I'm kinda expecting to be asked for both days the following weekend (18th/19th). Oh well, maybe I can save up for a nice lens for my camera...

We have a winner- Bull Springs Road

From the Wells Book:
Little-used mining road crosses Santa Rita Mountains from Interstate 19 to Hwy. 82 south of Patagonia. See mines along the route and adobe ruins at Alto Camp, once a community of several hundred people. The post office was active until 1933. Narrow, rocky shelf road at higher elevations. Suitable for high clearance stock SUVs. Remote location.

This is the backside of the santa ritas and josephine canyon area. I haven't been there in ages, it should be nice though.

Meeting time and location TBA (it will be in the green valley area around 9'ish on saturday 8/18/07)

There's a run organized from the jeepkj site doing Montana Mountain on the 18th. Casey and I did Bull Springs Road about three weeks ago, it was fun. Easy enough to not be in constant fear of damage, hard enough to require almost constant concentration. Quite a few ruts and washouts from the recent rains.

If you can push it back to the 19th I'd love to run it again.

The 19th is doable. If you've run it recently then Chiva falls might be a better option.

Chiva Falls would be cool (and closer to home), but I don't have any problems doing Bull Springs Road again, it was fun. Either way, I'm happy enough getting some off-road miles. Sorry, off-highway.

Vern, I'd lead a run down this way if wanted sometime. The line is really rutted and rocky after all these monsoons in the places where I took you and DH. It was great. Start in Bisbee and end up way out east of Dogass. Just a thought for sometime.

That could work Mike. Can you get it together by the 19th, or are you thinking another month?
