My 2003 Renegade has the factory Renegade plastic rack thing. I'd like to install a Yakima rack system so I can carry bikes and kayaks up there. My wife really likes the looks of the plastic roof thing, so removing it is not an option (I kind of like it too). I was thinking about cutting the plastic part just enough to get the Yakima LowRider mounts to fit on the factory bars. Has anyone done this? Do you think it world work? My only concern is that by cutting the plastic, I make it weaker and it all falls apart or something. Anyone know if the Yakima LowRider mounts stick up enough to clear the rest of the plastic?

Any other suggestions for getting some Yakima crossbars to work with the Renegade plastic rack?

Thanks

I just went out and meassured my LowRiders for you. From the stock (non-Renny) bars they stick out to the outside 2.25" and they stand about 2.5" taller then the top of the bar. On the inside they stick out 2.75".

The LowRider clamps over the bars and uses a screw clamp with a fold down tab arrangement from the outside so you would need full access to the outside or mount them outside in to install them. If you have larger than regular, non-Renny, bars then the Lowriders may not fit since they might not open up far enough. I believe Yakima and Thule both say their stuff will noit work on a Renegade.

On the renegade racks, the factory bars are covered by a piece of plastic about 4" wide. There are small cross bars mounted to the plastic, but the whole thing is only rated at 65 pounds. I don't think the OEM rac from Jeep would work.

Thanks for the measurements on the LowRider mounts. That will help me decide if I can cut the plastic enough to get them to work and still allow for the renegade rack look.
