I got info from the accident on 8/11/2007 at the Badlands
On the Xzr2 way home Saturday Night he ran into some people at the gas station that were talking about an accident at the Badlands. He called us back at camp to let us know and to see if he was part of our group.
Yesterday when I got home I got a phone call from a Jeeper pal looking for tech advise and telling me the whole story.
A local wheeler from the St Charles area was killed 12 miles from Badlands on his way home. His passenger was hurt but released from the hospital on Sunday.
From the conversation with my Jeeper pal. It sounds like he broke a front axle shaft at the park. He pulled the whole shaft and tried to drive home on route 41.
This is now the 3rd time I have hear of people pulling the whole front shaft and not replacing the stub shaft back in the unit bearing. The other drivers lost there wheel at low speed and lived to talk about it.
The stub shaft not only supports the bearing but also holds it together.
I am not here to pass judgment on him. I feel really bad because I saw him in the parking lot working on his rig and I did not stop just to stick my nose in.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and kids
