Last summer I bought a 04 Liberty Sport but now wish I bought a Renegade. What I have to change to make it a Renegade? I guess what I'm asking is what are the differences?

I know that the Renegade has all the OEM skid plates and full time 4WD and that the Sport model has no skid plates and part time 4WD. Do I need to replace the transfer case?

I think Ron is right, Last year on TRUCK TV on spike the shows host answerd the age old question as to how much to take a 2 wheel drive truck to a 4 wheel drive. Unless you have real DEEP pockets and really can't live without this truck, just buy a 4X4 and start your ride from their less expensive and less headaches

Maybe I misunderstood, I was just using the 2 wheel to 4 wheel as an example. The way I understood Ron's comment I think he is saying if you want a Renegade sell the Sport and get a true Renny the money and time and trouble spent to do a conversion isn't worht it.
Sorry I used the wrong example to make my point :!:

MOST IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES
1. Renagade Light bar
2. Skid Plate Package
3. Rock Rails
4. Tow Hooks
5. Rear Diff Locker

OF MEDIUM IMPORTANCE
1. More Powerful Alternator
2. Better Transmission Cooler
3. Pre-wired Tow
4. Better tires, but I would replace anyways..

The Rest IMHO are just cosmetic.

Get these things and you will have basicly a Reney. Hope that helps!

Since he has an 04, he doesnt need the flat hood since the rennys didnt have that until 05.

Light bar, fender flares, and the big plastic thing on the roof. many people have done it and its not that bad. :)

Skip the tupperware on your roof though because it is only rated to hold 65lbs. If your gonna put a rack on your roof your better to go with a surco or a yakima then you can put 150lbs in the basket.

For me the big thing would be the flares. I love the renny's!! With that being said though, you could save your money and by aftermarket stuff. Or just trade your sport in for renny.

Stock, although if you don't already have a LSD you'd be better off buying the Detroit Tru-Trac (i never get the spelling of these things right) instead of the Trac-Loc.

Thanks for the feedback guys, keep them coming.

I don't really care so much about the cosmetic differences but I am interested in getting the full time 4wd and more skid plates. I'll have to replace the transfer case won't I?

Right now I do have the front tow hooks an another in the rear trailer hitch receiver plus the front skid plate only. Next I think I'll get the transfer case & fuel tank skid plates.

Besides the "renny" upgrade there are future plans for a modest 2" lift (Rusty's?) and some aggressive 31's.

hmmm...maybe a Warn front bumper too....hey, I can dream can't I?

If your not into the cosmetics than the transfercase change really wouldn't benefit you any. They are identical ratios in the box, you'll just lose your fulltime 4WD function.

Trac-lock was not standard in the Renegade package. At least not in the 04 version.

Guys I dont know what part of the country you live in but in the ghetto where I live you can buy a 2wd renny with no skids and no hooks
Kinda like the "trail rated" KJ's with NO skid plates
all that stuff is for LOOKS only
our '03 limited came with the same mech. stuff as a renny but a better look and better int. IMO

If you have a 4wd sport then I would say keep it like it is
rino line the flairs ,the painted flairs scrach easy
lift it ,slap some 245/75's on the OE wheels and be done
if you want a more "trail worthy" rig then get a LOCKER for the rear and skip the LSD junk
it is fair at best under some conditions but no matter what you do 1 wheel peel will set in on a KJ with out ESP

This is just my take on it

I agree with you whole heartedly.

A wise man said to me once.... "As long as you wheel it, then who gives a sh*t?"

Don't forget the 160 amp alternator for your roof lights
