98 TJ, 2.5L, $5,500, great tires BF Goodrich all-terrain 31X10.5 with lots of tread- all 5 match, new catalytic converter, HEAVY DUTY front bumper with tow hooks, synthetic fluids for easy shifting on cold mornings, soundbar, 97,000 miles, very little trail time. Dependable daily driver.
Now the bad, It needs a replacement soft top. Tan with tinted windows would look great! You decide. I will allow $300. for new top; the air cond needs a boost too. The real price is $5,200.

I might try $5,000 even and see what happends. Just curious what the pro's thought.

A new soft top will cost more than $300 unless you get a cheap one or a used one. $600 is a more realistic price for a soft top. The price isn't that bad. I'd say thats about the going price for a 4-cylinder. Keep in mind that the 4-cylinder can be a real dog on the highway with bigger tires and heavy aftermarket bumpers and accessories. Might want to consider a 6-cylinder if it's going to see any highway use. The 4-cylinder does fine off road and around town, but it isn't meant to be passing people on the highway.

A high-quality Bestop with tinted windows and hardware is $800. A $300 top is only going to be the "skin" that goes over the factory hardware and the windows probably won't be tinted.

What manufacturer is the heavy duty front bumper. The lower-priced HD front bumpers are $300, the big stuff can be $800 or more.

You wouldn't be getting robbed to get it at $5000. The dealerships would be asking over $7k for the same truck. But definitely think about the 4-cyl. A lot of people think the 4-cyl is going to get a LOT better fuel mileage, but the 4-banger has to work really hard to move all that weight. The mileage differences might not be that big.

Good luck with your shopping!!

IMO that is about on par and depending on what YOU want from it then that may be fine but for me I would prepair to spend another 5-8K in mods in the first year
#1) replace the 35 with an 8.8 or 44
then lift to fit 33's regear to 4.56 maybe 4.88
lock front and rear
just to start

Guess I'm back to step one, didnt realize it was a 4 banger. A majority of my DD is highway and although I intend on getting a trail ride, I need some highway performance too.

Maybe it's just not meant to be, I dont know how everyone gets all these deals on Wranglers. I have been trying for months and cant find anything decent with everything I want or without a ton of rust/dents (ideally, I would like a 6 cyl auto). I'm no mechanic but I can do some basics, but it's either buy from a dealer at or around 15K or something for 8-10K and have to pay someone to do a lot of work on it  (sorry frustration setting in).

Thanks for all the responses

Don't get disheartened Joe. The deals are out there. I found this place in my search. Kinda neat. Check it out.

Joe - I was in your shoes several years ago. I really wanted a Wrangler. I wanted an auto, 6-cylinder, with A/C. It was going to be my daily driver, so I wanted all the comfy things. I couldn't find anything in my price range. I finally decided to by the XJ instead. A few years later I found an awesome deal on the YJ so I picked that up too. Thats when my Jeep obsession started. It always seems like if you're looking really hard, you can never find anything. The good deals come along when you least expect it. Keep looking. The good deals are out there.
