I saw someone posted a picture of license plate on his roof rack earlier. Can you tell me if this is legal in all states or is a push-your-luck thing?

I tried contacting NC DOT but they haven't gotten back to me with an answer

Im from NC, and it is legal. The only thing the law says is that it has to be visible from the rear of the vehicle from 50 feet. I called the NCDOT and the State Patrol, and both verified it.

Do you need a light for it at night?

Yes, I have a light for it (and yes, the light does have DOT approval --- it's the one that comes with Rock Lizard rear bumper kit), and I can extend wiring to go up to the rack.

I checked the NC DMV regulation (that part that they make available to public at http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/vehicle_servic ... onsmanual/) and it doesn't mention any limit to height / location either. They did mention the 50-foot illumination requirement.

I sent an email to DMV asking about this. Hopefully they will come back with something more definitive.

As long as its visible you should not have a problem. Look at some of the tankers trucks they have them up 12 foot of the ground. I have an LED license plate light ready for when mine goes up on the rack
