If you had to put a dollar figure on it, what would it be, I may have found 1, Im thinking it might become the communial PCM during inmotion tunes and possibly during f37 recalls(f37 affect the PCM or the TCM?)

Sam.

I'm not sure but I think they are programmed with the VIN and that may lead to complications

They are, but Im not sure what it means for dealer work, though for inmotion work it would be easy to keep your vehicle up and running.

The F37 change was to the Transmission module and Inmotion said they couldn't break the encryption on the TCM - so unless they could just do a blanket copy, and then you get into VIN programming - so I'm not sure how it would work.

However to the original question - from a marketing standpoint I think it could sell around the price of Inmotion's tuning - or maybe a little less - I think the performance per dollar is better with the engine tuning.

I just spent 2000 on the Suncoast & install and while the primary focus was to counteract F37 - and it was only partially successful on that, however I do feel I significantly improved the longevity of my transmission due to the new pump and converter, so I wouldn't have paid that much for the reprogram alone.

Ideally what Im thinking here is that we could do a "group" purchase where we all chipped in a little so that we could send off the ECM without having a vehicle down, for some people it doesnt matter, but for others it could be nice.

I really dont feel like spending $150 of my own money just to pass it around to others.

Of course if Inmotion could flash the VIN on the ECU then we could have a true core to exchange with them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understood that for InMotion to be able to make a blank/spare/used control unit work in your vehicle they first needed an actual, working unit (from your vehicle) THEN they could copy it for you, downloading an exact copy of the factory programming into a second control unit. If they were to use some random control unit and program it for you, it would require a dealer to "marry" it to your Jeep before it could be used. This approach could be used to prevent down-time but wouldn't the dealer want to know why you were swaping in a used control unit?

Marry? It to your jeep?

First time I have heard anything like this mentioned, why would it not just be a simple swap out?

Ok, maybe "marry" wasn't quite the best description. The engine ECU needs to be syncronized with the body control module, showing matching VIN numbers and such before the immobilizer will let the engine run. Also, each diesel injector has a specific code on it relating to quantity adjustment (due to not every injector flowing/opening/closing exactly the same) which also needs to be programmed into the ECU. This is why InMotion needs your ECU or at very least a "data file" of your ECU.

Hmm, I could see problems with the immobilizer if as you stated it it is a problem with VINs.

So essentially it seems like the ECU might be worthless to us as a "core"

I might be interested in the PCM if no one else is.

Not worthless - but only really good as a backup for you. What some guys wanted to do if they could find one cheap enough was to just have InMotion "clone" their original then use the modified version daily, keeping the stock version as a backup/troubleshooting/go-to-dealer-for-warranty control unit.
