what mods for Africa

First post, would just like to say what a great site you have going here. I have just purchased a 2006 CRD in Texas, which I am going to ship over to Angola, West Africa. We have no real dealer here this site will be invaluable to keeping it healthy! What mods should I do to the vehicle to improve reliability and driveability, bearing in mind that emissions are not an issue over here?

Do the ORM Board (check sticky) and the SunCoast Torque Converter Upgrade...then probably the Snorkel Upgrade and OME Coil/Strut/Shock Lift from www.boulderbars.com...with some taller tires. That should do it.

Buy the Cat 2 micron filter and vent valve mods from Greg at Lubrication Specialists, unplug the fuel heater, EHM on the CCV.

At least having the Cat filter adapter will give you the option of using filters with both M16 and 1"-14 thread, depending on what is most commonly available over there.

Depending on fuel quality, might want to stock up on some cheap throwaway or replaceable element prefilters, like the Fram G3 that some have used.

I'd probably have an aftermarket roof rack installed instead of the existing factory system.
Something like the African Outback roof rack. www.sleeoffroad.com is the only place I know in the US selling them. They are a Yota shop, but they can get them.
I think they raise your roof weight limit to around 1/2 ton instead of 150 lbs.

Having been to the dark continent a few times myself I would suggest equiping the CRD with a mefloquine dispenser

I would do the lift pump and fuel return line cooler for sure, and install the prefilter already mentioned. If the fuel is bad, you might want to take the cat converter off once your over there. Ditto for the EGR (ORM mod kit, hammer, or whatever). You don't want the cat or the EGR all plugged up.

extra fuel filters,
extra oil filters,
extra air filters
couple extra serpentine belts
extra MAF sensors
extra boost pressure solenoid filters
extra timing belt
extra CAC hoses
consider extra turbo
factory manual

Thanks for all the good info, will do the searches on the sugestions provided and get cracking. Car will be shipping from Houston at the end of the month, so have a bit of time to get the bits and pieces together. I already thought of the ORM board mod, but it looked pretty tricky to attempt over here? The Frankenlift and tires are also a cert. What is best front end protection, ARB or something else? Any issues with fitting a heavy bumper on the front end?

Also get yourself a good code reader setup to have around to diagnose any problems that could arise.

I second the lift pump mod. I would go further and suggest a 30 micron primary filter with a orificed return line to the tank and a 5 micron or less secondary filter.

There are many companies in Africa that make roof racks, bumpers and the like. They seem to make top-notch stuff and it may be cheaper for you to get them after you get there. You might want to look into that. The ARB maybe the only bumper that you can get quickly in the US for the KJ, as it is stocked stateside. I have not heard of any issues with putting a heavy bumper on-- if you use the heavy duty CRD springs (comes with the Frakenlift CRD). Without them you will have massive sag.

you will ned the strange european tire cover for their extra long license plates. I was just in Ghana africa last week and saw a crd liberty (probably a cherokee really). If I were you I would buy a toyota hilux (over there)instead of shipping a libby.

i'd second the tip about a Hilux. I lived in Burundi for a year, traveled all over central and east africa, even visited Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).Toyotas and Land Rovers everywhere, only the occasional jeep. I was in Angola for a week in 97, still Toyotas everywhere. Youll be sol if your CRD breaks in a major way. BTW I have an ARB on the stock suspension, still waiting for my Frankenlift to arrive from Rock Lizzard. No sag after one tough year and 7K miles. Good luck over there.

Ya, plus I know that used Surfs / Hilux can be pretty cheap outta Japan for import, you could get ALOT of vehicle for half what you would with a used CRD.

Agree on the whole right car for Africa concept, but I have lived here for nearly 40 years, so it's not like I just got off the boat :lol:

I have had a 24v Ram since 1999 and once I sorted out the fueling gremlins that they were all plagued with, it has been trouble free. When I bought that everyone here said that it would be a problem. That's why these forums are so great, as you can learn from everyone else's problems and hopefully change things on your own vehicle before you suffer them. TDR saved me countless headaches getting my Dodge right!

Hi there threadfin,

I was one of the first CRD (facelift model) owners to put the ARB bullbar on over here is S.A. I think I got 1 of 2 units that arrived with the agents first shipment . You don't see too many ARB bullbars on the Cherokees here so my suggestion is to get it done before you ship the vehicle. I waited for a year to get mine . It's a must have if you intend doing any serious offroading . Also look at changing the skid plate system to give the front underside section more protection , especially the oil filter which is exposed . The ARB has a protection plate underneath but does not give you full protection and does leave the hose somewhat exposed just behind the stabiliser bar . This area clogs up with sand especially in wet conditions when the earth is soggy . OME have a firmer set of coils out to support the bar with winch . I am still waiting for mine ( 3 months now ) . Anybody got a part number for me PLEASE ? I am considering bringing in myself. I have a spacer kit on my setup as it sagged by 25mm with the bullbar . There is a company here called Frontrunner that make a really good roofrack that fits on the grab rails . They could probably ship to you. 245/70 BF Goodrich A/T works for me . I haven't spun a tyre off the rim in the dunes in 6 months and I go down to 0.8 bar . If you go bigger on tyres you will get rubbing , will drive you crazy . ARB Locker if you can afford it . Don't ask me for mechanical advise , thats why I'm on this forum . These guys know there stuff .

The only site I've seen with the CRD coils is All-J's - it sounds like they specifically contracted to bring them into the US.
