My friend recently got a used Ford Super Duty with 6.0 PowerStroke. He
downloaded and printed the tech manual from International. I was reading
and noticed that the EGR system seems to work just like our CRD's. The
manual even said that the MAF and Intake Flow Valve were ONLY for the
EGR and not any part of the Fuel Management system. So I unplugged
his MAF and intake valve (left the TPS on the valve pulgged in) and told
him that this should keep the EGR from opening, give him better mpg and
a little more power. He drove it all weekend, no noticalbe difference in
power and no CEL but a huge difference in MPG. In fact it was a lot worse!
Needless to say, he plugged everything back in. This was just an
experiment to see if it would work, obviously it didn't.

Any guesses as to why?

From what I was told by some friends running the Ford/Dodge diesels. To stop the egr from working (ORM), all you need to do is put a small ball bearing ball or a bee-bee in the vacuum line that attached to th egr valve. I guess they are vacuum powered not electronic like the ones on our CRD's. None of my friends ever unhooked there MAF's.

Atempt this at your own risk, I assume no responsiblities for this action.

Most likely caused by what the ECM does when a invalid or no signal is recieved from the MAF

The manual from the manufacurer (International) said the MAF was ONLY
for determining when the EGR is to open. Also, no vacuum line on the
EGR valve. Looks like it could be solenoid actuated. The only reason I
didn't unplug it was because I didn't want to unplug it in the "open"
position.

different computer, different software.

CRD defaults to closed EGR when it detects no MAF signal - obviously the Super Duty doesn't.

Depends on the programmer.
