 Post subject: CAT 2 Micron Fuel Filter Problems

Okay folks, here's the deal... about a week ago I installed the CAT 2 Micron Fuel Filter. I ran it for a week using a full tank of fuel, no problems to include no leaks or any other issues regarding installation. On tuesday while driving home from work the Jeep died instantly going down the highway for seemingly no reason. I got it started back up and got home fine. Later I decided to go to the store and on the way back home it felt like the turbo went out, no power, engine reeving, slow shifting. The next day while driving to work I went about three miles and then the thing died on me again, it took me about ten minutes to get it started again after priming and doing everything else I could think of. After starting again, I drove it about a quarter-mile and it died again. I decided to go straight to the dealership afterwards...

So within the past half hour my dealership calls me and says that the CAT fuel filter is causing all the problems due to compression or whatever else they cannot explain. Just so everyone knows, these problems all occurred when I had over a half tank of ULSD fuel (no biodiesel).

What I'm asking now is some help with the CAT fuel filter situation as far as the dealership goes. I know several people on LOST have used this filter with no problems (from what I've read). If anyone could please help me out with their expertise it would be greatly appreciated...

I've been running the CAT filter for about 8000 miles, no problems, no stalls.

I'm a little paranoid because of everyone elses issues with air leaks, and I do notice its a little harder to start after heat soak. I can't attribute any of those issues to the CAT, they were probably occuring before I changed it out, just didn't notice before.

I have never knowingly run any BD.

What dealer did you take it too? I'm in Elgin and use Schaumburg Jeep.

Here's a few problems I noticed while installing the Cat filter adapter (threaded center pipe). First, unscrewing the old center pipe causes loose loctite flakes to go everywhere. You've got to get those washed out before starting up the engine. Second, and possibly worse, when you follow the installation instructions for the new pipe, you can end up putting your allen wrench too far through the new centerpipe, so it's protruding out the end of the center pipe. Of course you can't see this though, because it's hidden inside the filter head. Then what happens is as you thread in the center pipe, the protruding end of your allen wrench eventually touches (bottoms out) inside the filter head and starts grinding against it, tearing off metal chips. I did this by mistake and saw six telltale marks way down in the filter head. I ended up taking the whole thing back apart and buffing those burrs out, washing it out, and redoing it. I marked a line on the allen wrench so I would know the other end wasn't protruding when doing the second install. Then I reinstalled the whole thing, but didn't hook up the rubber fuel line to the CP3. I pumped the primer plunger to fill the filter until fuel came pouring out the outlet, which I routed through a clear hose down to a drain pan. I continued pumping to flush any more loose debris inside the filter head out, rather than have it go to the common rail pump.

If you didn't get your assembly clean clean clean, there's a possibility that debris has damaged the CP3. I've had mine apart 4 times now trying to get the leaks fixed, but haven't had any other problems over about 3000 miles. I think this last time I've got the leaks licked with a new Viton O-ring between the puck and head.

Hand your wallet to the dealer, they are in the process of voiding your warrenty.

You should have come here first :!: We would have told you to remove all traces of the CAT filter before going to the dealer. Your CR3 pump maybe bad and you'll be told the cost of it :shock:

Well I'm not worried about my dealership, its a "good'ole boys" outfit. The service manager is my father's best friend, my dad actually plays golf on the dealership's team and knows everyone who works there on a personal level. He's been buying cars from them since the 1960's, they've overlooked anything I've done out of warranty. In fact the service manager told me that this would void my warranty but that he wouldn't do it himself. I'm sitting on 33k miles right now, so I'm clear for another 3k...

Anyway, I made sure to follow all the instructions to the point for the CAT filter installation. I cleared all the factory threadlocker and used a special allen wrench that didn't go beyond where it needed to. This seems like another problem, I was probably wrong (or simply overreacting) when I made this thread. I discussed with my service manager all the common problems owners are having with their CRD's and he has been fairly responsive (mine is the only CRD he's ever even seen, let along worked on).

He did say that three "compression codes" were thrown when they tested it today. I don't know what to think, well other than I may be looking to trade this thing in within the next 3,000 miles :x

Install a new OEM filter head with the OEM filter attached and see if this fixes it.
