I'm not all that smart just a mechanic working for the County government. I learn most of the solution to the problem on this fourm but stall until a few did a mod on thier own. I had air in fuel since the beginning of ownership and knew the lift pump was an answer but still needed a way to expel built up air. I put up a poll for those who may or may not want to do this. I wish I did this long ago because I believe the my CRD runs and drives like a dream now.

Has anyone considered the Facet Gold-Flo series pump?

http://www.facet-purolator.com/goldflo.asp

I'm thinking of the 40007E, with built in filter. Also, for those that have installed lift pumps, which one did you use
and what results have you obtained?

Thanks

That look like a good choice also. I used Facet # 40109 becsuse its smaller and rather use an external filter available at any auto parts store. It will fit under the hood better and also will be more easy to change in a jiffy if need to.

I had a Facet like the Gold-Flo 10 or 15 years ago. Went through two of them in about 5 years time. When they got some age to them you had to smack 'em with a soft face hammer to get 'em going. I did like the built in filter and maybe they are more reliable now?

I thought there was wiring and a pocket for a pump somewhere under the rear seat, as I read a while back. I'm sorry I haven't taken the time to explore that yet, but isn't that location preferable to under the hood?

Yes there is wiring under the seat but you have to run wire from there to underneath. Then you have to cut the fuel lines or get fittings then bolt the lift underneath somewhere. I'm using a more simple approrach where everything is in one area under the hood.

Look again, I looked at these and none of these have a check valve in them. The one your looking at has a quiet valve. I'm not sure about the threads or fittings is big enough on that one also. I may still work ok. This is how I got mine, but there are web sites that carrys them for $43 plus shipping.

The threads are a bit small but if it flows 25 GPH then there shouldnt be a problem anyhow.

You are right about the check valve  musta read it wrong

I am wanting to do this but want to keep the flow and pressure as low as I can. So the 60104 looked most tempting.

Do we even need a check valve? There is one in the filter head already....

Where did you find them on the web? NEVERMIND

Check this out.

Guys, I don't think you want to drop any lower than the 40109 as far as flow. Remember, under WOT this engine will have a maximum fuel flow rate.

Going by the Racor website, their formula for sizing a filter for handling the maximum flow rate for a particular engine is roughly 20% or 1/5 th the maximum HP rating. Going by that you'd want to have a pump capable of flowing at least 32 gph maximum.

Also, from what I and others have learned about our CP3, you can go all the way up to 18 psi inlet pressure without any worries. Considering that you're pushing fuel thru one or more filters, and out the bleeder as well, and that the Kennedy pump I have belts out 4 psi continuously and my CRD runs like a dream, I'd say that 4 psi would be a more appropriate lower limit.

I glad to hear about you research and glad that the 40109 check out to be the right pump. Sure works great for me.

If your lift pump fails, and it is a flow through design, the original vacuum will resume and allow you continue driving. A fantastic backup system if I ever saw. However, if there is a check valve; won't the check valve suck ait into the fuel if under vacuum? Just trying to clarify, I'm sure a quick plug or removing the valve would correct. I am interested in how to do this check valve. I have a Kennedy lift pump on it now. Also I need to put a filter in line before my lift pump anyone have any suggestions?

I think the only thing the check valve will do is prevent fuel from flowing back towards the tank.

Mitch:
Thanks for reminding us of the specs you have found.
I think I will try the bigger posi-flow pump just so we can have a variety of experiments going. If it melts I will tell others not to try it  EDIT...actually I better find out the max temp on this little bugger before I even try it myself!

Didn't you use one of the Kennedy centrifugal pumps? If you did, no need for a prefilter for the pump itself. The way that pump is designed, you'd have to be sucking gravel thru it before you'd have a problem.

Remeber the "coffee grounds" pics of what I cleaned out of my filters, all that rust and dirt? All that went thru my Kennedy pump, and it didn't skip a beat. Gentleman wasn't joking when he said you didn't need a prefilter for his pump.

As far as max temp rating - Good point to remember! It has been noted that you can see fuel temps as high as 170 F. Max temp on the Kennedy pump is 140 F. That's why I have a fuel cooler installed in the return line. If you're not going to be installing a fuel cooler as well, better pay bloody close attention to the temp rating on your pump!
