 Post subject: Dealer put in 1/4 tank of gasoline in my CRD!

2006 CRD with 29,000 miles, 2nd owner, I bought it from the original owner. Still under factory warranty.

Check engine light kept coming on, after taking it back to the dealer 4 times I told them to keep it until they get it right. I left it with a full tank, when my girl friend picked it up she noticed they had used a 1/4 tank of fuel and asked them to replace the fuel. Someone from the dealer took it out and filled the tank with GAS. She started driving home, noticed it was running terrible, went back to the dealer and got the manager to go out for a ride with her. His solution was "punch it!" she didn't do that, but she did drive it for about a 1/4 of fuel. When I got home, I opened the fuel cap and you could smell the gas odor. Towed it back to the dealer Saturday morning, when the service manager realized what had happened he put his head in his hands and you could see reality sink in.

One positive part of this story is, the dealer owned up to doing it. They gave me a lot car to drive while they working on mine.

What do I ask for as far as concessions?
How do you evaluate how much damage was done to the engine?

I'm guessing that the fuel system needs flushed like the guy whose wife put gas in it.
I'm inclined to ask for the longest extended factory warranty they offer to put my mind at ease that the stand behind their work and new tires and brakes as a concession for causing the damage.

I'm thinking when it comes time to sell this vehicle, I think the right thing to do is disclose that gas ran thru it and the dealer fixed it. Saying that, what is the monetary value I attach to this issue? The service director told me the dealership would absorb the cost of repairs. I don't see any need for lawyers and I'm not out to fleece them. I want to restore the situation to as close to normal as possible and I don't want to get the short end of the stick either.

The other thing that drives me nuts is the transmission flash. Now at 35 and 65 my Jeep doesn't know what gear it wants to be in. I had a 96 Grand Cherokee 4 liter and it was great, 193k when I sold it. I'm disgusted with this one and the service I've received.

Look forward to hearing suggestions on how to handle this with the dealer.

Well had it been you that mis fueled it the record for it would certainly have a "misfueled" tag on it. So that in my mind means some damadge could have been done and most likely it would be to the FI pump. they need to do something to cover it.

On the transmission flash, dosen't it suck :roll:

In another thread, it was stated that the high-pressure pump is coated and the entire system was tested with this type of event in mind. 30% or less shouldn't cause you anything more than rough running until they drain and replace the fuel.

You should be Ok, and my guess is that you'll get a free fuel system flush and fuel filter replacement (not counting your time, of course).

I'm the guy whose wife filled our CRD with unleaded regular. The big difference in my case the concentration was high enough that the engine died within 3/4 mile from the pump. You may be in that dangerous range where the engine is still running but poorly. What's done is done, but since it was the dealers fault you at least want to make sure it goes into the service record in case you have any fuel system problems down the road. Ideally they could replace injection pump and injectors. Even if you could talk them into doing that it would have to be weighed against the danger of having them attempt such a repair. It would most likely be a learning experience for them. :? How long of warranty are you asking for? What if you want to keep the vehicle past 100,000. It's unlikely anything they commit to would go beyond that figure.

When you get the vehicle back I'd be interested in hearing your impression on how it runs.

25% mixture will do no harm to this or any other diesel. Get a new fuel filter out of it and a full tank of diesel. The dealer complied with your unreasonable request to fill the tank. I would consider yourself fortunate to have such a nice dealer and would not try and piss him off.

We have a guy on this board whose dealer clearly destroyed his oil pan and he cannot get him to do any thing about it.

On the "flagged" thing, someone reported here earlier that they had a friend or family member connected with a dealer search their VIN before purchasing a 2nd owner vehicle and there was a system "flag" that the vehicle had been miss fueled. I would make sure the dealer has not "flagged" yours since they are at fault.

Thats how its always been. They are working on your machine, you can either cover the fuel yourself or have it added to the bill. Its not like a dealer is just going to eat the cost...

My wife can go in and make the dealer do anything cause if they don't she will have them feeling like the dogs they are. :-)r I should know. :roll:

I would be careful about assuming that it was only a quarter tank. If I use my gas tank gague on my dash, 1/4 tank on the dash is actually a 1/3 of a tank. By the time I get to a 1/2 tank on the gague, I am almost 2/3rds gone! (in other words, I get 300 miles to get to 1/2 only my gague but only 125-150 miles left before my tank is empty).

On mine, if I dropped it off with a full tank, and they gave it back with 3/4, that means they used close to 200 miles worth of fuel. Unless the work they were doing involved having to drain a significant quantity of fuel, it means they idled that engine for hours on end, and/or put well in excess of 100 to 150 miles of driving on my vehicle.

At the least, they'd better have a bloody good reason for using up 1/4 tank of fuel. If the type of work performed and the stated reason for using the 1/4 tank of fuel jive with each other and my BS detector doesn't go off, that was just part of the price of getting it fixed.

However, if the work performed didn't require road testing by any logical reasoning, and my fuel tank is down by 1/4 and there's an extra 100 miles on my odometer (I always note the mileage when I drop it off for any type of work), you better believe I'm going to get up close and personal with someone.

When i turn in the KJ for service I ALWAYS write the milage and the fuel level on the paperwork next to my signature. A swell a any other car that goes in for service. Thankfully the Jeep is the only one.

Any fuel that would be used for the procedure being done I wouldnt care about but 1/4 tank will get you a long way....Besides when they give me a loaner they expect it to come back with a full tank....even though they are charging my extended warranty for it.
