Wife complaint dept:

Smoke is coming from the engine compartment and I can see it in my headlights at night when I'm stopped  My co-worker saw smoke coming from under the vehicle and asked me if there was a problem with my engine.

Cause: Crank Case Vent hose drops straight down to the frame next to the engine (Elephant Hose Mod).

Questions: Anyone run the CCV hose all the way to the rear of the frame and did you keep a downward running slope to keep things moving? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>smoke what smoke?

I noticed that the CCV actually pulses with the engine running so without a filter is the engine sucking in dirt at the same time it's venting with this mod? My larger CAT diesel has a steel wool type filter on it's CCV hose. Both the CAT and Cummins vent hoses drop straight down the side of the engine. The Dodge Cummins diesel does not have any visible smoke from the crankcase vent with 50K miles on it, but from time to time you can smell it venting especially after an oil change of Shell Rosmella 15w-40. The Catapillar diesel with 100+K miles on it definitely smokes and emits refinery odors from the crankcase vent but otherwise the engine has full power.

Is the crank case "blow by" from the VM Liberty diesel normally visable with only 35K miles on it? So far she has not mentioned any odor associated with the smoke. Could it just be water vapor? I think it "hangs" longer than steam would.

Exact same thing here!! I have the hose going into a small water battle with holes in it. When I park at night I can see smoke/fog in my headlights. I guess thats normal.

I have the EHM and I have the white smoke coming most of the time "its normal" :? . I'm glad its not going into my intake system. I also have to add about a 1/4 of a quart of oil a month because of blow-by that's a good thing!!!!

The member "skywarn" here had the smoking issues and recently extended his EHM to the rear of his Jeep. You might want to PM him if you have any questions. It seems to be working fine for him.

I love my Provent.. no smoking, etc. That sucker collects so much oil it's insane.

i did run mine all the way to the back... i too have a very well oiled frame rail. The oil seems to "pool" mid way in my hose (about where the pax door starts) every now and then ill just pull the house out from the frame and drain the oil. its never more than a few oz at a time. :D

We need to weld a little boss on the exhaust at the tailpipe and run a hose so it exits the tailpipe.

Thank you for your responses.

I'll extend the hose rearward as suggested. The frame rail location seems good for visual inspection stealth as I was careful to make the new hose appear exactly like the OEM.

I'll tell her that the smoke is actually steam venting from the Fetzer Vavle Ball Bearing and not to worry because this is a normal condition after the diesel engine finally breaks in... Jeep didn't realize this steam would be a problem so as usual the fine people of this forum suggested the fix...again
