I spoke to true flow (deana) re: a kit for the lil tractor and she responded that there's not enough demand for them to make one. I disagree.
http://www.trueflow.com/contact.php drop them a line...its a great product with superrior filtration and will spool up the little air pump quicker. i live 3or 4 miles from them so i will let them use my lil libby for r&d.
thx for your time

I thought the CRD already gets cold air, from the front of the vehicle. Why is it all these aftermarket "cold air" intakes remove the air box and source air from the engine compartment? That is a "warm air" intake......

I have heard or read that the air box on the CRD is badly built, is restrictive, adn lets rain in at times. Wouldnt this new intake circumvent these issues?

That may well be, but vacuum data would certainly prove that the stock box is undersized. And the '02 3.7l box will take care of the water issue. But not pulling air from in front of the radiator is not the right solution.

hey sir sam... did what mod?....this would be a filter with better flow to the turbo via smoothing out the ducting and reducing turbulence...

Agreed. I have seen cold air intakes that pull from places like dead space inside of body panels, or, well I guess a hood scoop on a KJ might look pretty silly.... But the cheap easy way to do it is find some place in the engine bay where there is room, and call it a cold air intake. Not apealing I agree.

IMO things like the "cold air intake" Are usually a gimmick, any gains seen in power are usually at a drastic loss of air filtration and fuel economy.

Just because a filter flows more doesnt mean it filters as well.

Running without a filter would flow a lot more, but wouldn't filter for a damm.

The mod someone did was to route some piping such that the air filter box was able to draw more air from behind the headlight.

ya that may be true in a narrow minded kind of way but their test confirm that the True Flow filter flows slightly better and filters far better the stock or aftermarket dry or wet filters. True Flow claims that a filter alone won't add h/p but smoothing the path to the motor/turbo will free up horsepower...

Seems like that would only be true if turbulence in the ducting is the major air restriction your engine has. If your airbox only lets through X amount of air per second, and your engine would preform better with Y amount of air per second, a smother ducting once the air gets passed the airbox doesn't really help anything. You still only get X amount of air per second, as the restriction is at the filter, not the ducting.

I do think the filter/air box system on the CRD is too restrictive and hurts our mpg. A high-flow, quality filter (ie, not a K&N) would be the best upgrade for the money.

Every 3rd party comparison of particulate filtration and flow data I have seen ALWAYS shows that flow is improved at a compromise of filtration.

Personally for the incredibly marginal gains you would see of a rework of the stock air intake system in power I think you would loose in other aspects.

Its a Jeep. Its a 4wd. Its a diesel.

Its not a 600hp NA Gasoline Supercar.

Anyone want a K&N filter for an XJ? I'm tired of the loss of gas mileage, dirtyer than normal oil, and no improvement in power it provides.

Yep. Get an Amsoil EaA201 air filter. In fact, I read about it on these forums. It flows more than the factory paper filter due to better filter material and more pleats, and fits in the factory airbox.

I second the Amsoil air filter. And I believe you can use it if you do the 02 3.7l intake mod.

I Put in the napa gold filter it has quite a few more pleats than the regular FRAM/mopar filter.

It was only 8 dollars and it gave me a gain from 26.5 mpg to 28.7 mpg.

There should be some more left if I could duct in more fresh air or a bigger filter media w/ cold air still.

I removed the accordian tube that goes from the airbox to the grill.
Yeah, this eleminated the ability for any cool air to be drawn in from the
grill but it also eliminated any type of restriction there too.
If you really think about it, the turbo is going to suck much more air than
the engine could alone. Being intercooled, the temp of the charged air is
dependant on the ability of ambient air flow through the intercooler.
There is a lot of debate among the Powerstroke guys on the effectivness
of a cold air intake and "high flow" air filter. Any change would be marginal
and probably not cost effective.

With any kind of turbo/supercharger, if you want more power, increase
boost and increase the size of your intercooler. If a air-to-air intercooler
is not good enough then switch to a liquid-to-air.

I think it was AFE or AEM that had the Brute Force cold air intake for our CRDs. It cost $300 and provided no improvements and I beleive they ditched it, I almost bought one but I'm darn glad I didn't.

I dont know about amsoil or napa filters but I think someone should make a foam based reusable filter like the companies I listed above.

trueflow does make a foam reusable filter that compared to k&n type filters does a great job. And if i remember corectly it filters better then stock. Also i agree with UFO... flash7210 did sum it up pretty well...
