Ok I'm interested in saving some gas or in this case fuel money, but don't know if the CRD is worth looking for and buying. I hear a lot of issues with the EPA BS on these machines.... looking for some advice.. Would you buy again?

Thanks
David

David.

Would I buy it again? After I bought my 06 specifically to pull a light weight travel trailer after retirement they preformed the "castration F-37" flash on it leaving it gutless! Knowing this before hand the answere is NO!

If you have the time and enjoy tinkering with cars then it might be for you. I can answere yes to both of them but when I bought a new vehicle I expected it to be reasonably free from defects.

You better come to fight if you want to take this truck from me. It is not for the "condo type" person that expects someone else to take care of them though. You need to be aware of the vehicle and educate your self to the ecentricities of it. Do what you can to solve any problems before they happen and find a good diesel mechanic in case of a problem that you can't solve. The folks here on this site are the smartest people I have dealt with and all but a few are aware of the treasure they own. My fuel mileage after the detuning recall has been 25 to 27.8. I do not live in the big city though. I currently run B5 Premium but plan on running B20 when the CO-OP makes it available this spring. If you want to buy it for the fuel mileage alone, forget it and buy a Prius. If you want to enjoy driving again and off roading some times and don't mind "tinkering" with it, buy one if you can find it. Run a carfax on it for sure.

I bought my '05 a few months ago. Spent about 2 months before that
researching every little detail about this vehicle. I am an experienced auto/
diesel mechanic and nothing I read about was enough to scare me off.
But I did choose carefully. I searched for one that was still within the 36K
mile factory warranty. Even went so far as to find one that had not had
the F37 performed (only to later have it done myself).
I am very happy with my purchase and feel that this is a much more
versatile, capable, and economical vehicle than my previous F150.

If you are the type of person that runs the vehicle to the dealer with every
little "odd sound" or "strange feeling" this is not the vehicle for you. But,
if you have patience and are willing to spend time reading about and
getting to know your vehicle, you will be happy.

There are usually several used CRDs available on E-bay and Auto-Trader at any given point in time. Thankfully, they are holding their value well - and much better than the gasoline version of the KJ.

As for being the type of person who runs to the deaer for every little noise it makes, that can be said for any car. With the CRD you will be visiting the dealer for some major issues (also dependant on the mileage of the one you end up purchasing and, more importantly, what's already been done to it and how well it's been maintained by the previous owner).

I am not mechanical enough to do major repairs on cars, but I know the basics. Because of the warranty, you won't need to do major repairs either. But, there's a lot of maintenance to do and a lot of quirks to the CRD, because it is a Diesel. You won't pocket all the money you save on fuel.

If you buy one: (1) Factor in the cost of the Mopar Extended Warranty into your purchase (you will use it) (2) Read this site every week or two to see what the issues people who have higher mileage CRDs have had so you can keep an eye or ear out for them (it is very informative). (3) Find a good Chrysler/Jeep dealership in your area that has a tech familiar with Diesels.

Lack of know-how at the dealership and lack of support/slow response to wide-spread issues on Chrysler's part are really contributing to this cars questionable reputation.

I think they'll end up being good cars that hold their value once all the major kinks are worked out of them via recalls, TSB repairs and the do-it-yourself fixes I see on this site.

PS -
Do I like it? I like driving it a lot. It' very functional (for the money) between it's medium size, good road manners and fuel economy.

Is it reliable? Well, so far it hasn't broken down, but I have been very meticulous about doing all the recalls, maintenance and fixes it needs (and it's needed quite a bit so far). Also, I do know the names, ages and report card grades of all of my service writers kids, nieces and nephews ...

I have to say, it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. Meets my needs fully.

I love mine. I may never own another gas powered vehicle.

That pretty much sums it up. Just try to find one that has not had the F37 done to it, and be willing to apply the patches and shadetree devices people here have come up with to get the vehicle to top reliability (ie. ORM, lift pump, Suncoast torque converter, EHM) and you will have a vehicle that has no equal on the current market.

For my needs from a vehicle and my expectations from the vehicle prior to buying, I would not buy one again. I love this engine and the 4x4 system, I do not like the interior at all. I cannot get comfortable in this vehicle and have found no good ways of becoming more comfortable.

If you want to buy a fully serviced 2006 CRD, send me a PM.

There have been some excellent comments that, IMHO, summarize the experience of owning a CRD very well. I absolutely love my '05 CRD. I purchased it with ~ 19k miles on it and I now have 28k on the clock 5 months later. It's never been into the shop yet. I am not a mechanic but I do enjoy working on cars in my spare time as a hobby. I love modifying and tweaking cars to make them better- and the CRD fits the bill nicely.

If you are looking for an appliance as a vehicle- look elsewhere. (i.e. stale low maintenance toyotas/lexus/etc..) If you are looking for an amazingly capable 4x4, short wheelbase truck that gets excellent fuel economy for its curb weight, can store more stuff in the back than a car, has enough torque to tow, has good resell value, but requires a watchful eye on maintenance items- get a Liberty CRD. The CRD is a blast to drive. I would buy one again if the market is still the same as it is today. (read: lacking diesel-powered options) If there were more small truck/suv/wagon diesel-powered options on the market.. I may look elsewhere simply becuase I prefer a nicer interior than the liberty has to offer and I probably don't need the amount "off-roadability" of the CRD.

There's just not many Diesel options out there:
VW Jetta TDI- nice interior.. but too small
VW touareg TDI- this thing rocks.. 500 ft. lbs torque.. but is waaaay overpriced, very rare, and expensive to fix..
Mercedes GL320 CDI suv - nice- out of my pricepoint though.. I like the exclusivity of this model though
Jeep GC - Eh. a few grand more and I can have a merc. why bother. Overpriced. Much cheaper non CRD GCs running around.. not exclusive
Ford / Dodge / Chevy pickups - jeeez these things are big. I don't need the size. Sucks in a parking lot / Garage. (will it even fit in a garage?!)
Jeep Liberty CRD - no new models, engine is in use all over the planet in fairly high numbers, affordable price, Good off road ability..

Zero problems here in nearly two years. According to people I know at Chrysler, the defect rate on the CRD has been substantially lower than any other Jeep vehicle, including the gas version(despite the negativity on these forums). I'd gladly buy one again, its the best vehicle I've ever owned.

I worry that those few that are for sale are the ones who have had problems! I would do a carfax, or any other research to find out the problem.
I have had mine since 2005 and have had no problems. I've had the F37 with no difference in power. In fact as I mentioned on another post I just pulled 6,000 lbs of bricks to the local landfill without a single problem. I don't know of any other vehicles in its class that can do that, and still get me over twenty miles per gallon.
One problem I have is that Diesel is consistantly higher than unleaded
I'm keeping mine!

I turn the key, it starts (every time). I get 40% better mpg than with my XTERRA. It is great in snow and fine on dirt trails. I have had no major issues at all. Is there something else to say?

I would buy one, but they're not for everyone.

The CRD is a great concept - even now there's nothing comparable on the market - however Jeep cut corners on the program. The biggest failure for me is that the dealers are not trained for them - most dealers have never seen another diesel and don't have a clue - I think Jeep training program was a 1 hour videotape, finding a dealer who services Cummins, Sprinters or other diesels is key - unless you - like some of our members are a trained diesel mechanic - then you'll love it, because you have an opportunity to fix it and make it great.

I don't know how they compare to gasser's - I've seen a lot of opinions and antedotes but no data, I suspect only Jeep has real data and they're not sharing.

Everytime we've taken a poll - about 2/3's of folks haven't had any problems, and most of the problems were fixed - but the folks who continue to have problems get really frustrated and we've got their stories.

Richardkf said it much better than I, as did Joe Romas. In that order.

I wish I had this resource before purchasing mine.
