 Post subject: 35.5 mpg on EVIC

I do a normal run from Indianapolis to Louisville frequently and yesterday I got an all time high MPG on my EVIC of 35.5. I was so surprised that after the end of the 315 mile trip I went to refill the CRD and do a hand calculation.

315 miles /9.5gal gave me 33.1mpg on the run. so true to form the EVIC was off 2 mpg no surprise there.

But overall 33mpg was the best run I have had in the last two years on long highway hauls.

I love this little jeep even with all it's humility flaws :shock:

33 mpg is great......I've hit 29 & 30 a couple of times.

Here are the specifics from my trip yesterday that yielded the mileage, it was a surprise as I have not done anything different on this trip compared to previous trips:

Tires are at 40psi and they are the Goodyear stockers with now 52K miles on them

Speed was set a cruise control at 65mph/1900rpm. Yes I got passed up, even by Semi trucks.

Outside temp was 83F

Fuel was mixed with PS cetane boost (Grey bottle)

ORM mod, I have the ORM circuit board soldered but not installed yet, just MAF unplugged

F37 was not performed on my CRD nor do I plan to do it.

I took a trip to Kansas City with the cruise on 65 MPH and got 33.06 MPG. I went the next week at 72 MPH and got 28 MPG. Hand calculated both times. This is WITHOUT the ORM. I really love this Jeep.

I am on my third tank. In mixed driving, about 2/3 highway at app. 68 mph, I have only gotten 23 mpg. What am I missing? I bought it to get 26 or better. What do I need to check and do?
Mine is an 06 limited CRD, automatic, and I was in 2 hi.

Your mileage is pretty typical I think. I normally get 22 to 23 mpg mixed driving. I did hit 26 one time on a trip to NC and back, but that was the only time....and a one time low of 19 mpg towing at 75 mph. I keep meaning to check the accuracy of my odometer with my gps, but haven't done it yet....just to rule out a calibration error.

I'm kind of a lead foot and enjoy the power too much to hold myself back from punching it from time to time.

I guess I am wondering how these people are claiming and hopefully getting 30+. I bought this to replace my Pilot, which was a great car, but mixed driving mph was like 17 - 18, hihway 21 if all things were good. I really was hoping for a little higher. Hey, it is still better.....
The computer in the car was saying I was averaging 29. Is that just telling me what I am getting at that precise moment in time? I was driving from Glens Falls yesterday back home to Westchester, and the thing said I was getting 30.8 or so on the thruway at 68 mph. Is that thing even close?
What mods can I do?

Try the ORM and see if your mileage improves.

On the relatively flat interstate between Portland, OR and Eugene, OR (100 miles or so) my rig has been getting between 28-31 mpg (according to the EVIC), depending on headwind and load in the vehicle. This is w/ the ORM, B20 in the tank, and my cruise set at exactly 64 mph (yes, I travel in the slow lane). I have 235/75/16 Destination AT's on it (the taller tires seem to lower RPM's a little at highway speeds), factory skids (except for the gas tank), run NAPA Gold filters, and Rotella 5w40. Mine came pre-neutered w/ the F37, and has had the F31 done as well.

Last weekend, w/ 2 people, a load of camping gear, and a kayak on the roof, the EVIC claimed a 26.4 mpg average.

In the city, mileage sucks. Lots of stop and go I get 19-20. This week I've been doing a mix of stop and go/short highway stints, and I'm getting 22.7 currently.

I think all of these individual vehicles are a little bit different, and driving style is a huge factor. For folks getting low highway mileage, I'd look at what other factors might be coming into play. Hills/head winds hurt the mileage (the Jeep has the aero of a shoe box--on one trip from Portland to Eugene I drove into a steady 20-40 mph headwind, and only got 22). I only get 25-26 driving over Mt. Hood to go fishing on the Deschutes River.

Speed is huge (over 65 mph the mileage drops like a rock), as is repeated acceleration/deceleration (use cruise control as much as you can). Make sure your air filter is clean, and make sure you are using quality fuel (I only buy my bio-diesel from either Sequential's own filing station in Eugene, or the Jubitz Truck Stop near my office.)

My best was 32 from Spokane to Seattle to Portland and it didn't hit 32 until right at the end. Now with the rack and the paper thin OEM tires replaced with real ones I am taking a greater hit. I will likely remove the basket unless I need it. I think it will add at least 1 mpg to have it gone.

I used to struggle to get 25 MPG until I took a 1600 mile trip pulling my pop up camper this summer. Ever since then my mileage has really improved. The last 200 miles pulling my camper I even got 24 MPG at 65 MPH, hand calculated. I think that the extra load really helped break the engine in. I now have 26000 miles on it. The ORM doesn't seem to help my mileage enough to even miss with. I still have the stock tires with 42 PSI in them. I can get 33 at 65 MPH but the mileage drops fast the faster I go. But I am happy with 28 MPG at 70+ MPH.

I found the tire chart that was posted here listing weight/height very helpful. I selected my Destination AT's to 1) get a little more ground clearance without a lift, 2) get a rugged tire for withstanding sharp rocks in E. Oregon, and 3) keep the tire weight down as low as possible. BFG AT's were tempting, but they would have killed the mileage.

These guys are reporting what the EVIC is telling them...It really has to be translated into reality. The only way to really know what your mileage is to measure the amount you put in each time and have a calibrated odometer and do the long division.

Second, if your CRD is black, I've seen you on highways north of the Tapanzee...and there is NO way you only drive 68 mph!!!! But if you really DO drive 68 on HIGHWAYS ONLY, expect 26+. But Westchester means NYC traffic....which is really going to killl you (i know). Second, the diesel in NY state is complete CRAP, which has a lot to do with it.

So, unplug your MAF (ORM, type 1) inflate your tires to 40+ psi, take a long road trip with diesel bought in another state, add some power sevice or a quart of biodiesel, and I bet you are up in the high twenties. Also make sure your CRD wasn't nuetered by the F37 recall. Since you are in NY, I know you bought it used, so check your sevice record or stickers under the hood (or on the CPU thingbob driverside). Also, check your airfilter and make sure you are in the top gear.

One thing to do is manually check your mileage, I didn't realize I was doing 5% better than I thought until I realized that my ODO was reading 5% lower than reality. Take a trip and track mile markers over a few hundred miles and see what your real vs. reported mileage is.

BTW, this made it so that the EVIC is actually about correct now, apparantly it wasn't the part lying to me.

OK. I need some help. Where do I find instructions on how to do the ORM thing? Will it have to be undone at inspection time for emmissions? Also, I do have sticker saying a recall was done.
Yesterday, I took off my air filter to see if it needed changing. Since I put it back on, the truck seems to be wheezing, and also smoking a bit. It seems to lose power and hesitate.
I did put more air in the tires, up to 40 now.
BTW, it is red....:)

33 mpg? Impressive - the best I've seen is 26 (hand calculated on every fill up - no EVIC on my Sport) normally 24-25. My current commute is 90 miles each way 90% is highway - strange though the cruise only seems to work at 79mph... :twisted: I suppose that may have something to do with my mileage numbers.

I have had the jeep for about a year and a half now and the best I've seen was on a trip from MD to NC this past July. I hit 30.2 mpg on the EVIC doing about 65-70 on the interstate.
