I am finally in a position to purchase a used crd, they are starting to show up on the net. But, having read a few posts from those who have bailed out, I just don't know.

I realize that there will always be a certain number of people who are not satisfied with their Liberty's so I ask these questions:

All things considered is the crd any better/worse/or about the same as the gasser; engine problems.

And of those kind enough to reply, would you buy the crd again.

And, of the two years they were available is one better than the other.

Just realized that some of the questions have been answered in another topic, sorry.

You have to realize that very few people out of 11,000+ vehicles sold are here on this forum and have expressed their dissatisfaction with the CRD. Also, take into consideration that a lot of the US public are not accustomed to Diesels and have operated gasoline cars their entire life. Many people expect a Diesel to be the same as a Gasoline car and that just will never happen.. so they complain when things aren't what they're accustomed to.

I think the CRD engine is better than the 3.7L gasser. (more power and torque, better fuel economy, more tuning options)

I would buy my CRD again.

The 2005 CRDs had a 7 year 70,000 mile powertrain warranty. It is transferable for like $150.. and can be transfered to the 2nd owner but none after that. This is not a bumper-to-bumper warranty and I hear it's realy only useful for catastrophic failures.

The 2006 CRDs came with electronic stability control but not a 7 year 70,000 mile warranty. They get the standard 3/36. Both the 05 and 06 are pretty similar.. I don't think one year is 'better' necessarily.

As I stated in the other thread I've been operating mine for nearly two years problem free. I have a couple friends at Chrysler, I have been told that on average the CRD has had fewer problems for owners than any other Jeep product, including the gasser version. I would not hesitate to buy another one, and two years later I don't see a better product in its class anywhere on the market that dosen't cost around $20k more(ie: Grand Cherokee CRD and the Mercedes diesel SUV).

If you read the general site and check history of other vehicles I don't think you will see that the CRD is any different and perhaps not as bad as many others. The 3.7 has head gasket issues and other problems. Really there as only been one reported motor problem here for DarbyWalters the other issues are fuel delivery, emissions or transmission related and many of those likely would have been solved through a little better dealer understanding. Some were inherant to the sub systems. You will find many non CRD issues with the transmission for example in othe Chrysler products

Without a doubt.

And, of the two years they were available is one better than the other.

Some of the early '05's had issues with glow plugs and a few other minor things that the '06 did not have.

I would buy one, but they're not for everyone.

The CRD is a great concept - even now there's nothing comparable on the market - however Jeep cut corners on the program. The biggest failure for me is that the dealers are not trained for them - most dealers have never seen another diesel and don't have a clue - I think Jeep training program was a 1 hour videotape, finding a dealer who services Cummins, Sprinters or other diesels is key - unless you - like some of our members are a trained diesel mechanic - then you'll love it, because you have an opportunity to fix it and make it great.

I don't know how they compare to gasser's - I've seen a lot of opinions and antedotes but no data, I suspect only Jeep has real data and they're not sharing.

Everytime we've taken a poll - about 2/3's of folks haven't had any problems, and most of the problems were fixed - but the folks who continue to have problems get really frustrated and we've got their stories.

I love the vehicle.

I would buy it again.

There are things that could be improved, but the same holds true for just about every made made thing.
IMO, #1 is the absence of a manual tranny. If you are going to buy a diesel I am betting you know how to clutch. The emissions-EGR-conundrum could have been dealt with better, but emissions plague modern life.

I have always thought there is a negative bias represented by this site regarding CRD problems. Most CRD owners are just drivnig around smiling in their CRD's, the few that have problems likely look to the internet. The rest of the amazing people here just share a quest for knowledge, and "some one" organized LOST...

There is nothing else like it in its class. I would buy again. I do recommend the extended bumper to bumper warranty. Repairs on a diesel can cost more than a gas engine. Only the bumper to bumper civers the emissions (EGR, fegr flow control etc). Sure can't afford a Ford or Dodge diesel.

If I would have made money over the last couple years I would be in the market for a second one, but then again I might also be in the market for a 2wd car for better mileage also. But as far as something that would start anytime and go anywhere I would ever want to go, this is the one for me.

I have had my CRD for 3 months now. It is better than I expected, all around. I just cant get over the low RPM torque... even with the F37. I use it for getting around in a hilly part of town at 45 mph and the way it takes hills is impressive. I have towed trailer and it is much better than you could expect from and V6 SUV. The really great part is its off road capability (once lifted). Combine the 4-low with the low rpm torque and, I swear, it just idles over terrain that made my ford f150 4x4 jerk and throw rocks at 3500 rpm. On the interstate it just glides along at 70, sipping fuel. On top of it all , I get a warm-fuzzy from using biodiesel, without thinking too hard about the political correctness of it all. The tinkering and the extra maintenence (compared to a civic) you hear about on this forum is part of the fun for me.... I think it is a great vehicle.

i'd buy a couple of them to stick in storage if i had the cash, i think it's a great vehicle i have one and my parents have one as well they get great mileage, pull like a v8 ok maybe a small one but the power is there and i haven't experienced any problems with mine yet.


yes diamler chrysler dropped the all abit with the service departments...
and yes you do have to remember that it's not a 45,000 dollar cummins powered truck or superduty or whatever and does have some limitations but it's a great little car and yep there is nothing like it availalble in the states. it's one of the few vehicles i've seen that actually make sense.

I absolutely love this thing - it brings a smile to my face every morning when I start it up and go rattling down the road on my way to work!

The CRD has a lot of "stuff" on it that other cars may not have. More stuff somtimes means more stuff that can fail. For example, there is a turbo, there is a super-high pressure fuel delivery pump, there is a water seperating fuel filter, there is an engine control module and a transmission control module.

A CRD may not be for you if:
A. If you think nothing on a car should ever break, fail or wear out
B. If you think anything that evers wear out or fails should always be repaired free of charge
C. If you make changes to your vehicle that affect the warranty and then get pissed if it breaks and is not repaired for
free (you "own" your mods).

I was hoping for these kinds of posts.

Have located a couple of crd's, one with under 8k and another with about 14k, am trying to get the background info on them. They are pricey, 21,000 and 17,000 but I am willing to pay the long dollar for the right Liberty.

I would definitely buy mine again - the Liberty is a great all-around vehicle. I have had few issues with mine - my torque converter was leaking from day 1 (bad weld; could have happened to a gasser or another vehicle as well) - the rear main had to be replaced not long after the torque converter. I've done some special mods, but nothing that absolutely HAD to be done.

The only real issue I have with my Liberty (and this applies to ALL of them, not just the CRD) is the window regulators. I have had both rear ones replaced (and I never use the rear windows!) and the driver's front replaced twice. The passenger front is the only original one left. But everything else has been great.

I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

I am real pleased with my CRD. Had a couple of problems (vacuum hose, wheel sensor) that any vehicle would have. I have never seen any other vehicle of this size do what it will, like a wide variety of loads up and down rural gravel roads and off the road on the farm, charge right on thru pretty good sized snow drifts, get 30+ mpg on trips regularly thanks to the few tweaks I did (ORM mod and EHM mod).

Just wish I wasn't having to pay for a farm and farm equipment, or I would invest in another CRD! It is a keeper!
