Lets say I have a friend who can get a pre F37 TCM, would my friend be able to use the TCM in his rig?

I've read somewhere that the TCM has the VIN number encoded in it, but maybe that's the ECM. Maybe both...I can't recall.

Yes...he can use it and it will not throw a code. The problem comes when he needs service work done and they check his diagnostics. At that point, there will be a discrepency in the VIN to the new TCM. My friend at the dealership told me that they can input the VIN in the new TCM when a TCM is switched out. He kind of said it on the sly however..."come back in and give it to me. I'll take care of it." The vehicle will still run but for future issues you might want to check with your dealership.

Good find!

Dave

Well I finally, oops I mean my friend finally put that TCM in that had not been neutered and wow, this is the CRD he fell in love with. Now he's got to get that Suncoast convertor...

Hey, Loco,
If I had such a friend, where would I have him locate a Pre-F37 TCM
and just how would you know that it was? My friend would gladly pay good
$ for such a find and would go straight to Suncoast to back it up.
Would there happen to be more than one of these where your friend found this one?

Is there an export Liberty that doesn't get F37? Could we try to buy one from another country?

Not sure, my friend stumbled upon this one in a U-Pull-It yard. There was an 05 CRD with 379 miles on it that had been really smashed. The motor was already sold, but we got the TCM, complete filter head assy, filler neck and fuel cap all for $30. Yep $30. I got the filler neck to punch it out so I can fit the larger fuel hose in there. So I guess call around your local junk yards. Look for a 05 crd and find out when it was junked. The tcm we got had no recall stickers on it, but that is no guarantee that it is pre F37. I guess we need the date of F37 and then find out how long ago the CRD was junked.

Hi! I may just be blowing smoke but maybe In Motion could just copy your friend's TCM program and Down load it into yours and mine!

Inmotion's concern was with the encryption - but that's only a factor if you want to change something - if you're doing a blanket copy - it should work.

lucky!

see if you can go back to the yard and grab the vin number for the Jeep, then run it to see if it has any open recalls on it.

This doesn't always work unfortunately. I've bought two TCM's using this method, checking first to see if there are recalls that needed being done, looking specifically for the F37. The ones that I bought still had outstanding recalls on them according to the Jeep website but they both had the F37 done. $200 bucks wasted. You might get lucky though...

Maybe a independent transmision shop is the only thing I can think of  Try hard to avoid F-37 if you tow anything more then a very small trailer

Loco, AZScout,

How did you confirm that the F37 code was or was not present? Was it based on the shift patterns?

Danoid,

What weird issues have you seen with interchanging model years?

What F37 did was replace the Torque converter - and if you have problems the pump and transmission cooler - and then reflash the computer to kill the torque - so if you're having problems I'd recomment - buy the new pump from Mopar - and the Suncoast converter - take it to an independent shop and have it all changed out - more expensive - but you get to keep your TCM programming, and have the better pump and torque converter - never let the dealer reflash - it'll automatically have the F37 programming.

Chris...

One can tell immediately if one has a pre37 TCM and switches to a post f37 TCM. The shift patterns are different in that the after f37 revs up to 2500-3200 before shifting whereas the pre37 shifts about 700 RPM less.
