Yes,

I understand supply and demand, but these things have also had their share of problems. I don't believe they are "bullet-proof". Now with the Grand Cherokee offering a diesel, some people will be getting rid of the liberty. Others just don't want a diesel. I think that is the reason why my local dealer is having a tough time. Everyone has a diesel in their farm pick-up in Nebraska. At night when you want to go to dinner, most don't want to hear the raddle. Some like me love the raddle anytime :D . Remember, they also listen to the raddle in the tractor combine, etc. You get my drift.... E-bay had a sport with 6500 miles sell for 18,800 this last week. I think that is a fair buy for the limited mileage. It was also equipped well. The right one will come along. :)

Yes,

I would like to buy the dealers limited, but it may not go. You never know what they actually have in it when they traded the previous owner. Sometimes the dealers are even willing to lose money if they want to see the thing disappear. Also, we are nearing the end of the month. Sometimes that helps too.

IMHO The new 3.0L MB WK Grand is not a competitor for the CRD KJ.

I looked at the WK CRD the last time my KJ was at the dealer. Its perhaps 10% more vehicle at almost twice the price of the KJ. You are paying $15-20k more for a 4.7% boost in cargo volume and an extra 2200lbs of towing capacity. The WK actually has LESS legroom than the KJ; I tried to sit in one and could not find a comfortable spot.

As Chrysler only offers the CRD with the top trim lines you have to pay an extra $15k for every silly bell and whistle to get $5k of better drive train.

Once you get north of $40k you have Diesel pickups from the Big 2.8, the same MB engine in several Mercedes SUVs, heck you can even get a nice Sprinter Passanger van with the 3.0L CRD.

Hello,

Yes I understand your point. However, for some, the money is not a problem, and they like to drive prestige. Therefore, some owners will be trading the liberty for a Grand Cherokee. Regardless of the facts, some people have a lot of money, and like to drive new and impressive vehicles. This is just a fact of life. Plus, hopefully there are some improvements over the liberty with the release of the GC. Seems like the liberty has had its fair share of problems from the transmission to the heating element in the fuel filter. Thanks for your opinion, and facts from testing.

Pete

Pete where are you located? If you are anywhere near the Left coast the CARB has put their thumb on the scale of the market and inflated the value of 45 state Diesels like the CRD KJ.

I've been lucky (knock on wood) and have not encountered any of the issues that have surfaced. Given that they lurk in the future and I've had good experiences with my local dealer I'm inclined to just spend the ~$2k on an extended warranty and live with mine for the next 5-6 years.

Unless you have your heart set on getting a small Diesel SUV 4X4 right now I'd just take a wait and see approach. I haggled with the dealer for ~10 days to get mine new.

The market for Diesels in the US is about the get much bigger in the next few years.

Honda is doing promising stuff, I suspect a Diesel will be offered in the Ridgeline and Pilot. I you could get Honda longevity and reliability with VW TDI fuel economy it would be the best or both worlds. I'd buy a Diesel Civic in a heartbeat.

Cummins is developing a smaller 4.2L that will go into the 1/2 ton Ram and likely the new gen Durango/Grand Cherokee platform.

Ford and GM are both working on similar sized Diesels for their midsized SUVs and 1/2 Ton PUs.

If you want more of a snow car/CUV thing I know Subaru is making noises about offering a oil burner.

Read "Don't get taken every time" by Remar Sutton for a guide to navigating the cay buying jungle. Good luck and happy hunting.

Pete, I tried to call, and left a voice mail on your phone. I'm Larry in Omaha and I own two CRD's and love them both. Both of mine are the limited fully loaded, both are dark Kakie and CDR automatics. The wife has the 05, and I have the 06. Tha only different is, she has the sunroof and I don't, I don't see a need for one. I have tweeked with mine, wife said I can't play with hers : ( I do a lot of traveling in mine and fuel milage will range from the high 20's to the low 30's, where as the wifes town driving get her in the mid 20's. I can speek highly of the my Libbys with no down sights execpt for one, and that would be @ aroung the 100,000 mark you need to have the timing belt changed. I too am a diesel mechanic for Union Pacific and I hope to find a manual so I may do that timing belt deed my self. Both are confortable to ride in and very good visuals to see around. Call if you need any more information.

Larry
