rear axel & manual gearbox.

hi, what rear axel do i have on my 2002 liberty (disk brakes all-round).
how can i tell if it's a dana 35 or chrysler 8-1/4? i want to buy a diff guard and also the lubriction spec is different for the axels.
what oil should i have in my gearbox? sae 80w-90 or sae 75x-140?

Wow, you have a rare 2.4L :shock:

You might be one of the few and have the Dana 35. There should be a tag on the rear end that tells you...just got to crawl under there and look. You could order a "Build SHeet" from a dealer and it should tell you exactly what you have.

A 2002 with the 2.4l will probably have the Dana 35.

Also, are you sure your Jeep has disc brakes on the rear? They didnt use disc brakes in 02.

He is in Sweeden so I am not sure...2.5L would be a diesel...but I think 2.4L would have to be petrol.

There used to be a guy on here a year or two back (unless the Ferg is still listening) that had the 35. I recall him having lots of trouble with it when he went to install a locker in the rear.

The Dana 35 is often seen on export Jeeps-those in Europe, etc but still VERY rare compared to the 8 1/4...

Look for the tag on the axle first-if it is still there after five years of abuse...

Very easy to tell by looking......the 8.25 has a flat bottom.

And 35 is round.

I think models with disks all round have the 8.25 axle - at least mine does

What I am curious about is your mileage with the 4 banger. You have heard all the moaning over the 3.7 mileage, what do you get? :shock:

Well with the lift/tyres etc .. something in the region of 11-18 lit/100klm
I don't know what that is in m/gl. It isn't the cheapest vehicle to drive, but it's not the worst either :wink:

~ 13 - 21 MPG ... sounds a bit better than most of what I hear of the gassers
