Does anyone know any estimates of how much it would cost to do a conversion? I'm looking for a shop here in vegas to do this but want to know what I'm getting into before hand. I'm suprized no one makes stronger cv axles for KJ lifts, after all alot of 4x4 lift kits allow IFS 4x4s to go higher than 2.5" like GM trucks, Hummer, Toyta FJs, etc.

It really depends on what You want in the end. Do you want to just use stock but regeared front and rear axles? Or do you want to build the crap out of a set of axles? You can easily dump a few grand into a set of axles once you figure in lockers, gears, rebuild kits, alloy axle shafts, special u-joints, custom steering, etc. It all adds up fast. How about the transfer case? Stock case or aftermarket or modded?

If you ask people that have had a TJ long arm lifted 6", had axles rebuilt/modded, added in an aftermarket transfer case, coil-overs up front, etc and had a shop do the work you will be in the ball park minus maybe a couple thousand for the custom work required on the KJ.

I would guess labor alone for doing a SFA w/ appropriate lift and other mods would run $6-8,000 and up depending on what custom work would need to be done for your particular parts.


BTW, Last I heard, JE REEL makes stronger CV's for the KJ.

Some of it yes. You would need the front axle and if the XJ was built up w/ transfer case mods, etc. you might be able to use some other pieces. A better candidate would be a built up TJ possibly a rolled one that wasn't rebuildable as some of the suspension pieces (if long arm lifted) would possibly be reusable.

You would need a SYE equipped transfer case which a lot of other lifted Jeeps use. Preferably a High Pinion D30 or D44 front axle w/ mods would be best since you will be building it. (front locker, gears at least 4.56's, axle shafts, maybe aftermarket steering, etc.) Many XJ's have the HPD30 and a lot of modded TJ's get switched over to them.

THere are a lot of good used TJ parts out there all the time for sale since many TJ guys just can't stop modding either so they are always upgrading. It is real easy to find modded axles w/ 4.56's or even 4.88's. One of the best places to look is on Pirate 4x4 in their for sale section and on your local craigslist.

If you accumulate parts over time by making up a game plan and then shopping for used stuff you can come up w/ some deals and save money. But Beware! Do your homework on used stuff and make sure you get what you Need and make sure it is complete and in good working order. You can think you are saving a buck only to find out it might cost the same or more than new to make something used work properly. (trust me, I know :roll: )

One thing yall need to understand, and I said it before somewhere, is that ANYTHING will work for ANY vehicle you just gotta be committed 110% to the mods and do what it takes to get what you want. JJs right bout us TJ guys. We are ALWAYS upgradin and tons of guys sell off their D44s off the Rubis in exchange for a Hi9, D60, or somethin similar. They also sell the axle shafts all the time along with the NV241 tcase if they go with an Atlas or somethin like it...how do yall think you get the Moabs and MTRs?? Rubi owners who cant be satisfied :lol: :wink: Keep an eye out, ROF is another good site that is all Rubis so lots of stuff comes up for sale there...

Haven't gotten that far yet,But figuring about $600-$1000 for coil springs and shocks depending on how fancy of shocks I want(not using coilovers,hence using full width axles).I was figuring the driveshafts under Misc(along with a Kilby gas tank skid,extended brake lines,and front Anti-Rock sway bar).It sure adds up fast :twisted: !

It can be done for less,I'm going overkill on my axles so hopefully I don't break anything anytime soon.Also some of the things I'm getting/doing are not needed like the AtlassII t-case(you could save alot of$$$ by going to a TJ 231 with a SYE conversion for under $400) and the hydroboost brakes.The RE long arms are pricy but there ChromeMolly and should never bend or break.You can cut the price down alot if you look for deals on parts but I have a thing about using used parts,the only used parts I'm using are the HP D44 housing(housing only) and the Chevy calipher brackets(can't get new),everything else is going to be brand spankin new which costs more.

Designing a SFA swap is going to be my Pro-Engineering Modeling project since I can't even begin to afford a shop to do the work. I figure I will model a lot and then go from there. I have even heard my university has a 3D printer which could be really cool for scaled parts!
