Today my KJ started making some really odd noises. The noise only happens when the Jeep has been driven for a while and when accelerating from a stop.

They can only be described as a gourgeling noise that is purely mechanical... and they seem to be coming from directly below the driver's seat.

Forcing the transmission into first and second gears ( it's the 2001 orig automatic tranny ) did not resolve the noise. The noises went away while driving home with fewer people.

I just had a belt tensioner and the water pump replaced.

Any ideas?

This is probably too obvious to be the real problem...but it couldn't be your exhaust pipe knocking your tranny skid, could it? The first thought that came to my mind when you described the sound was the noise my exhause and tranny skid made when I first installed the skid. I had to take a hammer to it.

I forgot to mention this, but the noise did go away when we put the transmission into nuetral, but reappeared when put into any drive gear.

Things that are directly under the Drivers seat are:

1.) Front Driveshaft
2.) Transfercase - not directly under the seat but close
3.) Transmission - not directly under the seat but close
4.) Front Diff - including since it's attached to the D/S

First thing you should do is check the fluids in those components. Next, look for loose or broken mounts / attachments. Grinding noises indicatiate metal rubbing on metal. Start there, if everything checks out OK look on the passenger side and then in the engine bay.
