Am on a trip about 700 miles from home. Was motoring along with the cruise set to 75mph. All of a sudden I heard this:

psshuUPP.........BIZZZHHHOUUUUU!

The note of the turbo went from "turbo whistle" to "high-pitched metallic whine" and it's a VERY loud whine. If you've ever heard an old hard drive failing, that's what it sounds like. It still drives fine and seems to have plenty of power. Air filter looks fine and all hoses are intact.

Any ideas or words of wisdom to get home by?

Thx.

Blew one of the Boost-pressure hoses off the turbo compressor or the charge-air cooler or intake manifold, or sprung a leak in a hose or the 'cooler - worst-case.........well, I don't even want to mention that, yet.....................

If it seems to run good and have plenty of power then still run through the checklist below just for peice of mind.

1) Cut off the mesh protector from the hose going from the turbo to the inlet of the intercooler and check for rips
2) Cut off the mesh protector from the hose exiting the intercooler to the intake and check for rips
3) Look for a rip close to the hose clamp on the hose connecting to the turbo
4) Check and tighten the clamps on turbo, intercooler (inlet and outlet) and at intake of flow control valve if loose

4) Air filter could have a puncture and a small particle pebble could have been ingested by your turbo, replace air filter and clean airbox of any debris (leaves, dust, pebbles....)

5)If 4 above, with an obstruction the vanes in the VGT may have gotten stuck temporarly causing an overboost situation

All of the above are good advise. If the turbo completely pukes it can make that sound. If the bearing let go, the pin wheel will start to rub against the compressor housing at high RPM. You can imagine the sound and carnage. I'd say tear apart the intake to the FVC and give everything a good look. A blow intercooler boot can be hard to find. If you can't find any obvious problems, spin the pin wheel with you fingers and apply a little lateral pressure making sure it doesn't touch the housing. The shaft will have a little play but shouldn't rub the housing. If the turbo has puked, make sure there is not oil in the intake. Won't want a run-way (FVC or not).

Thank you all for your quick replies. The Jeep made it home!

The turbo vanes rubbing against the housing is about what it sounds like. Accelerating at about 2500 rpm sounds like a circular saw going through plywood.

Checked all the intercooler hoses and the little boost controller lines, but they all look fine. Air filter looks fine. Took the airbox-to-turbo hose off and looked in the turbo, didn't see much. Spun the turbine and it moved freely. Pulled on the shaft of the turbine and there was a little axial movement. Not sure if that's normal.

Had the codes read at Advanced AP (because ORM keeps MIL lamp on, don'tcha know), and they were:

P0102 - MAF - how did I know that was there?
P0299 - Turbo Underboost - stupid just replaced EGR.
P1189 - Manufacturer Control Fuel Air Metering - new one on me

So anyway, I'll call Keene Jeep and see what they say.

It is still under warranty. The dealer is 1.5 hours away and not exactly convenient. Anything I can, I fix myself. Appointment for me to wait is made for 9AM Monday morning.

My turbo was defective from day 1, with only 300 miles on it. It had the same tone you are describing although not as loud. There was a 1/2 inch of side to side slop. The dealer says are you letting it idle before you shut it down. They will say anything to get out of the blame game. After close inspection this turbo is not a VGT.

Brought the CRD home from the dealer today. Much better! Tech stated he cold move the intake impeller "up and down and back and forth" and that he looked at it with a mirror and could see that the impeller made contact with the housing. Had to replace the turbo and a stripped, seized stud. Got to look at the old turbo and take a quick pic of the exhaust side impeller. Ugly!

Who knows how long it was bad before something catastrophic happened. EVIC mileage on the way home was >2 mpg better than normal.

Tech said that the new turbo was definitely different. There was a nut on the intake impeller where the old one didn't have a nut holding it on. The whole boost actuator was re-designed. My guess is that there's more internals that are re-designed that we don't see. <shrug>

Is there a broken/missing blade in the lower right of the turbo?

uh huh. I think one vane is broken, and one is turned 90 degrees (and possibly broken too).
