Did you restore the seals to the hood? It might be that taking those out limits the effects of this change.

The CRD does not have the "foam" seals like the gasser...just the single rubber strip running across the front of the hood. The weatherstripping you see was added and a couple pieces were added to the hood to make it more airtight.

I know that. I believe you indicated that you had removed the hood weatherstrip and you had also noted that the gasser had some crush seals on the hood to keep air from slipping past the snorkle.

its still there, the camera is just low enough that it is looking under the end of the hood past the cowel to the windshield.

How about 20" or so of that plastic hose that hooks up to the discharge of a clothes dryer.

The open end could come through the grill - where the intake currently is located. The hose could be snaked around - similar to the path that Darby has set up with cardboard - and then attacched to the snorkel with duct tape to provide a good seal.

Somthing like that could provide the "ram air" effect and provide enough convolusions to allow water and leaves to hang up prior to hitting the filter.

I've been talking about this for a while, good for you Darb. The OEM set -up makes tries to make a ram scoop but, IMHO, fails. I might try to improve the OEM, I'll post picks.

Here I am looking at this possible setup and then it dawns on me...I am defeating the purpose of the Gasser Airbox. I am trying to collect air (with dirt and water) from the same area as the original CRD Airbox. I am still going to work on it keeping all this in mind.

I keep looking at those air scopes I've seen on some cars. (I think chevy Barreta) they position them right and left front edge of the hood. I think they are non-functional, but something like that would do the trick.

Ideally that would give you cold ram air, stuck up in the laminar flow on the hood. I can't bring myself to cutup the hood. Need someone to photoshop it see what it might look like.

There is a photo rolling around the LOST forum of the military wrangler with a snorkle coming out of the hood. It would seem that would be a viable solution for the CRD as well and mate it up with a tube from the snorkle sealing it under the hood with crushable foam weather stripping.

An observation about snorkles;

I lived in Australia for many years, and was surprised by the number of SUVs and Pickups (Utes) with snorkels, compared to the western US. I figured it had to do with the Aussie tropics and fording rivers, etc. Another obvious difference in Oz is the much greater number of Diesel SUVs, compared to the US.

I have finally put two and two together, and now realise that the large amount of air and the direct path to the turbo make "air path routing" much more important for diesels, hence the common use of snorkles in OZ, perhaps.

I am sure ED will have something to add to this!

gmctd...that is not really that hard looking at it. If I made the next grill opening over the intake and then snake it down where I have the "catch" now and then back up...it is doable. Will have to test fit something.

It is still too early to tell...but...this little change has bumped mileage up a bit...I keep track on www.fueleconomy.gov of every fill up and since the air duct I have gained about 1mpg...like I said it is still too early to tell but it is looking good.

Yep - wish I could get more hands-on with ours, so I could do more than just sit and kibbutz - but, #2 son has apparently come to the realization than I've quickly become quite comfortable under his, with the hood up and the wheels off the ground - or, maybe he's noticed that I always refer to it as 'ours' - familiarity breeds comtempt? - absence makes the heart grow fonder? - possession is 9/10ths the law? - don't fix it if it ain't broke? - what? - I'm a good person - I been a good parent - right?......................... :(

I'll try to get some pics of the 6.2 stuff, soon's I learn how to use this digital camera - if it's got any more than a on-off switch and a volume control, I'm sunk...............
