Tried to engage my 4wd the other night on the way home and the lever would not even budge. I was giving this thing the berries and not a hope in hell of getting it out of 2wd. I haven't engaged it since early summer and it's a good thing I tried it now before the snow started to fly. Any ideas? Something as stupid as a rock lodged in the linkage? Or worse?

'03 KJ 3.7L Rocky Mtn. Edition Select-Trac II (Patriot Edition for those south of the border). Got under it yesterday and could not see anything in the linkage that could cause it not to shift. Any idea on the cost of a teardown and rebuild on these? Any idea what could have jammed? Fluid is full, and you would think I would have heard something horrible if something had seized up?

sometimes its easier if you give it a little gas ... coast at around 3 mph .. then pull on the lever ...

but it does sound like another problem you have there.

It's an auto by the way. Tried everything you can think of... coasting, parked, cruising, 70km/h, etc. Nothing is working.

Well the t-case is shifted by a cable so the cable might be siezed internally.Select-tracs have a known problem with shifting and not totally disengaging out of 4wd also.Check the fluild cause low,bad fliud, and the wrong fluid(should be ATF+4 only) can cause shifting problems in the select-trac also.

If you can pull the center console off and pull back the rubber boot on the t-case cable and spray the heck out of the cable(and hopefully get some into the tube itself) with WD40 it may break free.

I was mistaken when I said the last itme I engaged the 4wd was early summer. I had used it driving through the mud from a campground while towing my tent trailer this past August. Had no problems then. Just changed the fluid this past summer with Amsoil ATF. Should be ok. I'm baffled!
