Oh, besides busting my window, I also snapped off a tire stem giving me a flat tire. I would like to replace all my stems with standard ones that are rubber without the pressure sensor... can this be done? and if I do can I disable the TPMS warning light?

He was on a coffee break and someone came by and broke his window, reached in to steal his radio. But alas, our young hero was too smart and was carrying his radio with him by the Benzi Box! (anyone old enough to remember those?)

Not much to tell. we were squeezing betwen a couple tight trees and the trail was at a slight downhill slope to the right and it was very slippery. I was clearing the trees fine but then my rear end slid down the slope a little and the tree kinda arched outward at just the right hieght and pushed in the window with a loud CRACK! Oh and I got a quote today for $250 plus tax installed.

And Adam, what the hell is a benzi box? And how did you know what I told my insurance company happened?

Ah, my yound friend. Back in the late 70's and really more like early 80's, when car stereos were stolen like they were giving them away (hey, wait a minute), and everyone in NYC had a "no radio on board" sticker, well, where do you think the radio was?

A Benzi box was a sleeve that was installed in the radio hole that allowed the stereo to be slid in/out as you left the car. It was common to see someone at a party walking around holding their stereo by the little metal handle. It was funny.

Basically, it's like a laptop docking station.

Then we (humans) advanced to removeable faceplates. Hoping crooks won't bother to steal the guts without the face. These radios were inoperable without the proper faceplate.

Then, Guiliani came to power (maybe it was before that). Oh well, whatever it was, crime went down, apartment prices soared (it's still over $1million for a CHEAP 1 bedroom apt without a doorman, not near a subway line, etc).

And now every Taurus (I mean Ford 500 or wahtever) comes with a gazillion watts of 42 speakers of surround sound and sub woofing fun. Heck, my wife's MINI VAN has a sub woofer, 6 CD changer in dash, 200 watts and about a dozen speakers. No one has stolen it yet :D

Ah the good old days when nickel bags cost $5 and the coke didn't kill you (before crack, that is)! Ah yes, the 80's. (Or so I've been told!)

ahh, battle scars.. the window is kindof ruff but just slight bruise, it will heal and you'll avoid that kindof punch better :)

You would think that disabling the TPMS warning light would be a no-brainer, but no. Both dealer and DC agree that the warning light cannot be disabled due to "safety reasons", no matter that there IS NO sensor feeding the computer any data :-)r

I replaced my stock tires/rims with MT/R out of a Rubicon and my TPMS light had been on for 5000 miles now. It's good to know that lamp has long life [sarcasm off].

Seriously, who designs this system anyway?

So, am i reading this right.... The tp...(whatever) monitoring system takes it's feed from the valve stems? So I guess getting 4 small tires (say 4"), filling them with the proper amt of air and leaving them in the cargo area would register the correct values?

no, you wouldn't, would you?

Hmm. Mount those tires on your roof in case you roll over. This way you can keep on moving without holding up the group if you do.

I bet that thing can be programmed. A certain wire snipped?

And to think, I remember 3 years ago when AnthonyKJ figured out a way to upgrade his 2002 KJ to INCLUDE the tire PSI system.

Just an FYI, disabling the TPMS in your '05 KJ is illegal (same as headlights and airbags) as it is mandatory saftey equipment. '04 and earlier can do whatever they want with TPMS if they have it as it wasn't government mandated then. Taking the sensors out or running a different set of tires without sensors in them may be illegal as well.

Will someone bether you about it or probably even notice? Not likely, but it's better to know where you stand. When your state inspection comes up though they may check the TPMS system.

Unfortunately for those of you with '05s that don't want the TPMS you either have to deal with the warning light or I suppose you could just take out the lightbulb.

Also, it's easy to add TPMS to '02-04 KJs because the entire system (aside from the sensors of course) is contained in the EVIC. In '05 KJs the standard TPMS is built into another module.

How do I add it to my 2003 Renegade with EVIC and why wouldn't I want to?

I just had two issues with slow leaks that I didn't know about right away (stiff sidewalls!). Monitor would have been nice - and safer.

i think if i wanted a quick way to look and see with out the hassle of this stupid light i would just put those valve stem caps that turn red when the pressure is low and green when it is good...

My 05 CRD doesn't have the TPMS, I really doubt that it is manditory.

I Just put the Rubi Rims and tires on my 05 Rocky Mountain Edition and I have no light so I don't think they came on mine as well.

Well, because at least on mine, the stem for them is aluminum and sticks out past the rim so it's susceptible to being snapped off on the trail and it's about $50 to replace (or so I'm told, I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet)

Here's a huge page of info on the system. This page is based on the Cherokee but it's still very informative.

http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/pdf/nrd-01/esv/esv18/CD/Files/18ESV-000256.pdf
Here's a link to the NHTSA document which introduced the idea of making the TPMS mandatory way back in 2000

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards; Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems; Controls and Displays" (RIN: 2127-AJ23) -
This is the law making the TPMS mandatory - but it's like a complete tutorial on the TPMS system and how it works, what the drop in air percentages are for warnings, reset times, etc, and is VERY informative (and long!)
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/rulings/TPMSnprmPost2Cir/TPMSnprmPost2Cir.html

The only thing I can find about the legality of disabling it is that the law states it is "The manufacturer's responsibility to install the system". No-where does it say that it is illegal for a consumer to disable the system.

You may not have sensors or an overhead console, but you still have a form of TPMS (the dash warning light.)

Try letting a bit of air out of one of your tires.. go down to about 20psi or so and then look at your dash after a few minutes.. my money says you have the monitor.
