Yes, there will be gasoline available to run your Liberty in 15 years and for many decades beyond that. Of course, it’ll probably cost more, but it will be there. Known world crude oil reserves have between 50 and 200 years of oil in them. Beyond that, there are other alternatives for gasoline production.

A U.S. Geological Survey report published in June 2006, the Green River Formation (oil shale deposits that lie under Colorado, Utah and Wyoming) contains the equivalent of 1.47 trillion barrels of oil. This mega cache is enough to feed America’s oil addiction for well over one hundred years.

Oil shale, which is neither oil nor necessarily shale rock, is any sedimentary rock saturated with organic goop, called kerogen, that hasn’t been in the ground quite long enough to fully morph into fossil fuel. Before oil shale can be used as a fuel, it must first be chemically converted into synthetic crude.

There are half a dozen viable processes available for separating kerogen from rock and converting it to useable fuel. Some countries have been using oil shale commercially for decades, although competition from cheap crude oil has kept it from becoming widely accepted. But the economic equation is changing as global demand strains liquid petroleum supplies and drives prices upward.

The concept of oil being totally organic is quite silly. Nobody is going to dig grandma up in 1 million years to power the car with her. There is a reason they say ashes to ashes, dust to dust and it is a bit silly to think that plants and animals are the sole, or even primary, source of oil material when the only thing in common between the two is that they are both assembled from carbon particles-- carbon being one of the most numerous substances on earth.

Really? And from what, then, did petroleum originate if not plant and animal life?
