Diff Collar Success

Ok, just finished test driving after installing the diff collar, no contact, no strange noises, only tried it in full time 4wd.

I used the the McMaster steel collar, part # 60665K61 and had it machined out 1/16. It didn't fit, and I've been staring at it for a couple of days. Tonight I decided to see if I could make it fit.

I used a die grinder to open it up, not much effort, must have been really close. It only fits in the orientation pictured, I think the housing is a little oval shaped with the big ends up and down. I put a couple of coats of high heat barbecue black paint on the inside of the collar (dries fast) and clamped it down.

I'll update this as I get a couple of miles on it.

Rotate this 90 degrees right for correct orientation

The diff collar from McMaster is only $38 plus shipping, the expensive part was the machining. I couldn't find a small shop anywhere that would do it for me, ended up with a fairly big tool maker that had a minimum 1 hour shop fee. $80 bucks is a lot for turning it down.

If you can find a machine shop to do a batch of them, might get the per collar cost to of machining down to about $20. that puts the price somewhere around $80 bucks shipped, similiar to the first group buy.

Don't expect them to fit on every housing the same, the machining just gets it close enough that a sander or die grinder can do the rest.

The Steel collar has a smaller "outside diameter" than the aluminum one L.O.S.T. Members purchased in the past. The thicker aluminum one made contact so the smaller steel one is the best option for the CRD. Good Job!

That McMaster part number is not showing up as valid. Do you know what the correct number was?

Hopefully, yes. There are numerous members of this board who, while driving somewhat aggresively in 4wd, have exploded the front differential. Aparrently it's not strong enough to cope with high separation forces on the pinion gear and it splits the front pumpkin in half. The theory is that this ring will prevent that. No one has yet blown one up while using the collar, but not many people have them.

I'd think it might be better to machine it or buy it a little too large, so that it doesn't even fit snugly. Then line the collar with "hard as steel" epoxy putty of some kind, and cinch it down that way. With the mold marks and deformities on the outside of the dif casting, I'd expect that tighting down the collar on that would make very uneven stresses within the casting, and might cause more problems than it solved.

Yeah, that was taken back in the Summer on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. You can drive on a lot of the beaches there. Dry sand will quickly teach you the value in airing down tires.

Back on topic. Bugnout started with a 3 1/2" collar. Machined it to 3 9/16", and then had to open it up a little more. Sounds like 3 5/8" would be a good starting point for the epoxy idea. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be a stock size. They seem to jump from 3 1/2" to 4". The 4" collars are a good bit bigger on the OD. Sounds like customizing the 3 1/2" is still the way to go. The epoxy idea also takes care on another issue with the steel collar. Back when there was a group buy on aluminum collars, some were concerned that a steel collar on the aluminum housing would set up corrosion due to dissimilar metals. Epoxy in between should prevent that.

I found some other sources of collars, including a 3.625 Inch bore with a 5" OD, unfortunately. The large OD migh not fit in the CRD, fron what I have heard.
