Pits on Windshield

Hey guys, I remember seeing a topic on something similar before. Yesterday, I heard a few pings on my windshield, then noticed a few, what you may call, "pits" where there were a few tiny, tiny chips on the windshield from a rock, etc. I checked a few websites last night, and one was very informative and said that pits do not need repair. Only larger stone chips with bullseyes, legs, cracks, etc. I have had many of those in my past vehicles that needed repair. I guess some little pits are OK, as long as there is no sign of cracks, etc. What is your take on it???

It depends on the location and size of the crack.

I've got 3 major rock strikes in my windshield but no cracking. Luck maybe? In a previous car: I was just driving down the road and the windshield started cracking for no reason...

If you are worried about a rock strike you can have any autoglass shop fill the area with epoxy. This should prevent any further spreading of the crack.

It's almost a small pit from a little rock, or pits, I should say. You can barely feel them by running a fingernail over the top of the windshield. Almost a flake of glass. The pits are no bigger than the tip of a pen.

Mine is the same way. It's basically "sandblasted" from driving on the highway.

I have two pits on my windshield and one patched crack. I don't know how much difference it'll make to you since you live in Canada, but I just passed VA state inspection. VA is pretty strict on the "big" stuff, like tiny windshields pits, tinted windows, and bumper heights (the sarcasm should literally be dripping out of the cooling slots of you monitor by now), so I kinda doubt anyone will require you to fill the pits.

Yeah, those tiny pits are actually etched into the plastic film like layer on the outer edge of the glass. MyJeepWalks termed it best as "sandblasting" and no filling is required here. If you wish to get rid of the flakes, you'd have to replace the whole windshield. (Yikes!)

I certainly know that I "don't" have to patch them, I was just wondering if they "should" be repaired. I am just wanting to make sure that pits normally don't spread like stone-chips. I want to protect the life of my windshield. From other sites, they say not to fix them, as it is merely wear and tear, and that it won't affect the day in day out function of the shield. Thanks.

I mist have a billion of em!. Mine are smaller than a pen tip, more like the size of the tiniest pin you could find. Over the whole windshield. Really only see em when the light hits a certain way. I guess sandblasting is the best term.

Yep i've got lots of those too... in certain lighting conditions it gets a bit nasty.

The best way to fix it (around here anyways), is with a hammer and a call to your insurance company ;-)

Not that I'm advocating doing anything umm illegal or immoral or anything... :oops:

Pffff $200 expenditure every 2 years in colorado. Windshields get replaced very often here in colorado, I can only imagine other snowy parts of the country have similar issues.

most insurance comprehensive coverage covers minor windsheild damage for free. I know progressive, american family, and geico do for sure.

generally they have $500 deductable.
New Windshields cost $250. If you are sick of it (like me) wait for a bigger chip and get it replaced for that price..

This is like a starfield, i have the same doo doo and I am sick of it. What kind of cheap booty materials these american vehicles are using? Cheapness, nothing else. No other honda, toyota, benz, etc i drove never had this. Maybe because of the angle of the windshield, never the less..
There is also "Diamond something" that you can get done, like a layer on top of the windshield to get it fixed, all smooth again.

Another thing I hate with this windshield is that line in the middle from the wipers..

you can get rid of the line easy. Just go with a set of wipers that dont have all the pressure points in them. I switched the as soon as i got the libby; im really anal about being about to see everything perfect; and my window has been crystal clear since. An i think you may have misunderstood me about the insurance. Is not actually under the comprehensive coverage but its an extra free service thats considered comprehensive. they fix anything an inch or smaller for free. I use it about every three or four months when a semi throws a huge stone or something.

OK, I see..
Not sure about the wiper without pressure points, though.. I just replaced my bosch ones with michelin ones, the ones without springs, and they do have that line in the middle as well. I guess that line is hard coded there, won't get off no matter what I do.

if you go to autozone they sell a little buffing kit for an electric scrwgun that will take the lines off that were left from the ones without springs. I should have mentioned i did that also. It wont take away any of the sand blasting but it will fix the lines from wipers

Buffing kit for electric screwgun? Like rotary buffer? What should I put on it to buff it out?
I wiped that windshield like 50 times over and over the same area up and down with Stoner invisible glass, it did nothing.

I think I got those new pits on the same day, due to cooler weather here in Eastern Canada, they are starting to sand/salt the roads, with lots of little rocks and pebbles........nightmare for windshields. I have only replaced a few in driving 15 yrs. with different rigs. Here in Canada, most auto glass repair shops fix stone chips for free, so it's worthwhile getting them fixed provided the shield isn't ruined. What they will do to keep you loyal to their businesses.......

you dont need to put anything on the pad s that the kit comes with; its already presoaked with whatever the compound is. All i think you need is some water and clean rags.
