Spare wheel theft prevention.

Does anyone have any good ideas on how to secure the spare tire against theft? I let my spare go naked (without the cover) and have to park the vehicle on the street at night. I have one of the three lugnuts with the lock but anyone can buy the lock key from the dealer for a few bucks and steal tires. I don't want to put some ugly chain or cable lock around the tire. Any ideas?

1. Three different types of lugnut locks.
2. apply deadly poison to the wheel, lugnuts, and tire
3. put the spare in the vehicle
4. put a really ugly bald spare tire and ugly wheel on the back
5. Use the cable and padlock as you mentioned you don't want to use.
6. Apply a bunch of animal manure all over the wheel and tire
7. Paint the tire & wheel pink

#1 and #4 might be good options. Anyone else with theft potential problem and solutions? Thanks.

Just because you have three different wheel locks on there doesn't mean it's secure. I could get it off in 5 minutes with an electric impact. Anybody can go to an auto parts store and buy a wheel lock removal kit.

I leave mine on there, my vehicle gets parked in some shady areas overnight (my girlfriend's apartment, while not really a shady part of town, has some shady characters around after dark...on occasion it spends the night at a bar...)

3 vehicles with a spare in good shape hanging off the back end, and I've never had a spare stolen. My Montero and Trooper never even had locks on them! Which brings me to another idea...

My Trooper had one extra long stud, with a hole drilled through it. I always assumed the hole was there for a padlock...because you can't exactly slide a lug hole of a wheel over a padlock. That's not a bad idea, but apparently you don't want anything ugly. If ya don't want anything ugly on the back end, deal with the security issues;)

I have wheel locks on mine, BUT I look at it this way, if someone wants it bad enough they are going to take it anyways, you may slow them down but thats about it. Do you want them destroying the whole gate trying to get it off or just make it enough to where they make look and say its not worth it right now. Actually this is the first vehicle I have ever owned that even had locks and I never worry about it !

i would like to put mine in the vehicle eventually but by the looks of the kj, it was designed with the rear spare in mind and looks even more like a durango without it

x2, I have a lock on mine under the cover but never worry. Granted I do live in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

never lost a tire but once upon a time had the factory spare tire cover stolen off my Geo Tracker in a WalMart parking lot in broad daylight on a Saturday afternoon. :shock:

I have had a few spares stolen from company pick ups with the tire on the underside. I use wheel locks on both of my Jeeps, and I use a cable lock as well on the spare. But thats just me. I haven't lost a spare on any of my Jeeps as of yet.

well if your not concerned with legal implications; a shotgun and drunk hick makes a good guard. Now as for a better soluation if your that worried about it would be to put some kind of padlock on it

I park in a garage at home and work on an Air Force base so I am rarely at risk but if someone wants your spare, they will get it.

Thunderbirdjunkie, that is true but you need to have one on hand. A cable or padlock is a lot easier to cut, faster, and quieter. The impact will make more noise.

Here's an idea.

Run wires to the spare to make electrical contact with the wheel, have the wires connect to an alarm, so, once contact is lost, the alarm goes off. You would have to make this yourself and nothing guarantees that when they get scareed of the alarm, they still don't take the spare with them, but at least you will know right away when it happens.

There is another way. Use a coil from an old model "T" to run a few thousand volts through the KJ. No amps to speak of but it will knock the hell out of anyone touching the Jeep! It also is great for stopping dogs from hiking their legs on it. :twisted:
