It seems that the turbo is making a higher pitched sound than normal. At first I thought it may be in my head, but my wife also noticed it. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Is it just more normal "turbo noise" at a higher pitch or does the noise sound like it might be metallic grinding. Both have been encountered by others but have different causes.

Let me see if I can explain this. The "whosh" sound of the turbo between 10-20 MPH now has more of a whistle to it.

Check the inlet ducting, incl the airbox, for loose clamps or leaks

Check the compressor outlet ducting to the charge-air cooler for loose clamps or rupture leaks

I was just about to post the same question. Mine is coming from the rear passenger side. At first I thought it was a wheel bearing going out, but I realized that's where the exhaust is coming out. It seems to come and go with how much throttle I give it, which makes me believe it is noise from the turbo. It also it seems to go away when I turn it to the right.

By inlet ducting, I mean from the airbox to the compressor inlet - if it sounds like the whooshing, hissing of air under pressure, it's the hose between the compressor outlet and the charge-air cooler

Turning right would lean the engine to the left, which could displace the ducting.

Just an idea.

Did you recently fit an oil catch can/provent filter to your CRD?

That might cause the new sound as the inlet will be less cluttered and give a little more boost when the old crud has been cleared (with right foot action). I have noticed my turbo more since I added my oil catch tank.

Just an idea!

No provent, but now I am thinking it is tire noise from being out of alignment.

Easy to check for. Put the car in neutral and rev the engine. Or better still, go offroad and put it in low range and go up a hill, that way you can check if its the tyres or the engine revs which makes the sound.

FYI -mine had a whistle after I re-installed a Provent (took it off for a dealer repair) - finally tracked it down - vacuum leak from a tear in the hose from air box to turbo.
naturally no hoses in Austin or in Texas - closest is in Missouri - it'll be here Tuesday

Well, no provent installed and I had an alignment yesterday, and it is still there. Took my wifes step dad, who was a dcx tech and now is at sears where he did the alignment, and he thinks its either a wheel bearing or the noise is coming from the rear differential. I am going to change out the rear end fluid this week and if that doesn't fix it I am goint to let the dealer deal with it. I changed the out the rear brake pads last week.

I had the rear end rebuilt, pinion and ring gears, and no more noise. :D

Well I spoke too soon. It is my wifes car, so I don't drive it that much. This weekend we head out, and is only the second time I had driven it since I had it in for service, and the noise is back.
