I got a set of four winter snow tires already on wheels, from the previous owner. They have been used the last few winters and have been balanced. I called my Tire Shop today to have the winters put on, and the guy, whom I know, said that they should still be run through the balancer first, to make sure they are in tune. Even though they are balanced, should this be done as a precaution, or is there no need for it?? The owner said that through the life span of tires, they should be balanced 3-4 times. What are your thoughts, before I take the tires in? They are already mounted and balanced on the wheels.

If they are "new to you tires" than balance them now. There's a decent peace of mind in eliminating the vibration headaches caused from an unbalanced tire.

If they are already balanced and none of the weights have been removed, I would not worry about it. once the snow weather is gone they come back off, right?

It would be a CYA move to have them balanced. You can never tell if a weight got knocked off during summer storage, or some other weird thing. Personally, I'd balance them.

the rubber in a tire shifts over time, whether it's being driven on or not. Have them balanced.

x2 on the wiehgt or damage. you never know what the person before did to them or how they drove them that may cause them to become unbalanced. I always get my tires rebalenced whenever i rotate them just for that added piece of mind even if they dont need them. An yes they have needed it from time to time. Ya never know if that pothole throws if off.

Thanks guys!! I went with your recommendations and had them balanced and installed today. They did wind up needing a few weights changed.

Anyway, took the summer tires/wheels home and cleaned them for storage. My favourite, Simple Green worked great at cleaning all of the brake dust from the inside, "brake side" of the aluminum wheels. They were coated with dust and dirt, now they are silver and shiny. I just used my household Simple Green and it took a bite into the grease and dirt.
