I don't profess to be the most mechanically inclined person, but something just doesn't seem right to me. Today, I changed the oil in the Libby and installed the Fumoto, so I obviously purchased the transmission skid as well. When going to install the skid, the two threaded insert pieces that are supposed to mount (insert into) to the cross brace right behind the transmission seemed to slide right into the holes and in no way would stay where the directions said they are supposed to. For those that have installed this...am I missing something? I know it's a plate with four bolts, which should be an easy task, but I am really stumped. Can anyone help me with this one?

From what I remember when I installed mine this summer the piece has two long tabs that slide into a cross brace and then it will hang there and the bolts from the skid infront of it are used; the two skid plates overlap and use the same bolts towards the front on the Jeep.

blake,

do you remember how the rear bolts were held into place? I know the bolts for the front are shared, but it is the back I am having trouble with.

I just installed a Fumoto and it's become very clear that I want a transmission skid plate too. Since I'll be doing this soon as well, any pictures/writeups are appreciated!

Have you held the skid up against the crossbrace to verify everything lines up and you are looking at the right holes?

The Nutzerts you install into the frame to bolt the skid on to require two wrenches (or a wrench and a socket). One to hold the Nutzert itself in place, the other to tighten the installation bolt that causes the butt end of the Nutzert to mushroom out and hold in place. As I recall, mine would spin freely unless you had wrench #1 in place to hold it still. It gets tight as the end mushrooms.

If you bought a jeep transmission skid it should have come with insert nuts for the rear holes and a tool and instructions for how to install them. The insets are squashed into place like a rivet by the tool. Hope that helps.

thanks for your help guys...i did not know that the inserts mushroomed. i'll have to make sure that I find a torque wrench, i wasn't sure the purpose it served.

I didn't use a torque wrench, just a big ratchet handle and socket. Tightened until very snug and called it good. 10,000 miles and no issues.

Those are known as "RivNuts" and you DO need two wrenches to install them, and you don't need a torque wrench. Just a lot of elbow grease. Crank them down nice and snug, and they will never move again. Just make sure you have the correct holes first! You don't want to think about trying to remove one of those... You can't.

There is a torque meassurement for the nutzerts. If you over or under torque too much you might end up with problems. If memory serves the torque is around 35 lbs.

EDIT: Here you go, it is 25>30 lbs.

so has anyone had this happen.....?

just went to install my skid and put the inserts in the holes and then cranked them down with a torque wrench only to find that there was no "mushrooming" and the aluminum insert stripped out and broke. now I need to buy another insert (maybe hardware pack). followed the instructions to the "T", and am frustrated that something that should be so easy has become so much of a problem. anyone have any suggestions or other install tips that maybe I don't know about?

You got it, you must follow the instructions exactly to the "T" - if not it does fail. Also you should install the nutserts in the cross member before you install the skid plate. The aluminum part becomes as it were the threaded hole in the crossmember. The next step is to loosen the engine skid bolts a bit so the front lip of the tranny skid will sit in between the front cross member and the engine skid. Than you put the bolts in at the rearside of the tranny skid into the nutserts. Tighten all bolts and it's done.

KJ79,

I was installing the nutserts before the plate was on but it seemed like all it did shrink the length of it down, there was no "mushroom" effect. Eventually, it became too hard to tighten and the nutsert would still drop out of the hole. Is it possible to not have something lined up right?

Josh, hmmm....this sounds strange to say the least. Do you have the instruction sheet 2 of 3 - K6859664? on the bottom of this page it shows the step 1,2,3 pictures of the procedure. Did you get the special high nut 'A' with it? You got to keep item 'B' pressed into the hole, hold the wrench on the high nut (do not turn), you turn the bolt only (25-30 ft.lbs). I had it once that it did not work at all. I thought it was because I did not push it tight into the cross member or I might have had this thing under a bit of an angle. It might have been a bad insert too, I couldn't tell. I remember putting some oil on the nutsert, the nut and the bolt tread - that made it a lot easier.
So, I would just go to the dealer or Napa and get a few extra nutserts, try again, eventually it will work (use some oil or grease). Persistence always pays off. Good luck.

Perhaps you somehow got the wrong size nutzerts.
