Rattle

After a couple hundred miles of somewhat rough dirt roads there's an annoying rattle that sounds like it's coming from the passenger rear wheel well. I swapped rear shocks (3 week old OMEs) and tightened both to 80 ft.lbs., still rattles on the right side. Everything seems tight and I don't see any missing bushings. Any ideas? Thanks.

You already said that you tightened everything especially the shock mounts but that would of been my suggestion. And since you don't have Rustys Im not sure if the shocks are whats making tha noise. Just in case go over everything with the torque wrench again while the Jeep is supporting its own weight.

I have a rattle in that same area but, mine is inside my Jeep. Been doing it for about a year now and I can't find anything mechanically wrong so I've mostly stopped worrying about it but, it is kind of annoying not knowing where it's coming from.

Mine does that, unless you are positive it is outside, try this. My rattle was from the seat back latch, on the right rear seat. There is a rubber insert on the seat back that tend to walk. It is what keeps the latch and striker quiet.

Have you checked your upper ball joints? I'm experiencing the same rattle and suspected the LBJs, so I jacked it up to check them and my UBJ on the passenger side was starting to go bad. I'm ordering Al's a-arms this week, hope it stops the rattle.

I have the same problem. I'm getting a used UCA and putting that in next weekend. Fun stuff.

Thanks everyone. It's not the seat, and it's definitely in the rear, not the front. Rechecked everything I could see - still can't isolate it. Dang.

How bout those bushings in boomerang link or rear control arm? I was looking at mine last week and they're not looking too good. I'm not experiencing any noise so i'll leave them be for now.

Similar noise coming from inside my jeep. You wouldn't happen to have a privacy cover in the back of your jeep do you? I do and mine squeaks and creeks like mad if I don't open it up. Shuts up completely if I just take it out, but then it doesn't do what it was supposed to

This seems the most likely (the noise seems to be exterior, and suspension-related) suggestion so far. Inspection of the bushings reveals nothing out of the ordinary, however, at least without disassembly. Thanks.

My solution to any strange noise that I can not put my finger on
Turn up the radio or open the window
it has worked so far after a few days you dont even notice it any more
I think they just fix them selves

i thought that the rear shocks were suppose to be at 35ft-lbs?

There have been some complaints of loose bracing in the rear door causing rattles.

So I have been chasing a rattle down for a while that I thought was coming from the suspension.

Then I noticed when closing the tail gate a little harder than normal the same noise.

Pulling off the plastic was pretty easy - except that I still could not locate the rattle. Jeep designed the door in such a way that it's welded together and hard to get to certain areas. The location of the rattle was known, I just could not get to it.

The blame lay at the feet of the spare tire mount, specifically the bottom bolts.

So I pulled the spare tire and the mount. I then greased all the mounts and bolts. To isolate out the chatter I made some bushings out of 3/4" aircraft sound deadening foam and slipped it over the bolts between the body and the mount, and then again between the mount and the tire. I then tightened the spare carrier back onto the tailgate.

While the covering was off, I also installed some spare sound deaden material over top the thin stuff Jeep has installed.

It took a few hours to figure everything out, by the rattle is gone.

I have the same noise, only when i hit bumps etc, pretty sure it was my new durango sized shocks i added when i lifted it, got out the torq and tried it again, nothing helps, but its def the rear passenger area.

Found it! It was a loose bolt on the forward end of the right rear control arm. Tightened it and it went away. Now it's happening on the other side - anyone know the proper torque for those bolts?
