Just curious about how often this happens.

Hoping not to get many "positive" replies ;)

The only problem on the engine was a blown oil cooler - covered under warranty.
(although they changed radiator and overflow tank flushed the system a dozen times and there's still oil in there)

Actually, I have lost an engine to a faulty piece in the head. I L.O.S.T. it at 8,100 miles. The valve guide/glow plug/they really didn't say broke and went into the engine. New engine fine with over 25,000 miles on it. Jeep replaced my whole engine compartment...including turbo, AC, EGR, ect...came as a total assmebly.

Would be interesting if we posted the range our kj has covered. So far mine sits around 75,000 miles / 120,000 km. No sign of trouble :)

Ok?
Why do you ask?
Is there something the rest of us should know?

Assuming that everything was assembled correctly at the factory, this
SHOULD never happen. Unless...
1. You somehow turned the boost way up
2. Poor maintenance/abuse

It's nothing to do with the KJs reputation. Love the car, I have a feeling that it's engine is very reliable indeed!

I had an old Patrol GR 2.8 from '95 which were prone to crack heads and head gaskets. I changed mine after only 3 months ownership of the car. At the time it had done ~ 155,000kms. Asked a few guys who had had a Patrol GR. They responded "standard procedure". The engine has a reputation which has given it an unofficial "service interval".

100,000kms for the head, 200,000kms for the gearbox. 160,000kms for head gaskets. Completely normal.

Everytime people talk about the car they kid eachother about how many heads and gaskets people have changed.

I have a feeling that the problem is mostly related to being driven heavily and has a bad cooling system. It may be fine when it leaves the factory but it degrades enough to overheat easily after some years.
