HERE'S THE SCOOP, AS I UNDERSTAND IT...
in fulltime- it's lmited slip front to back, meaning power is shifted to the axel "asking for it".
in indiana, it's great for hi-way miles where it is dry for a mile or two, then slick spots/drifts/etc. if you don't know whether or not you need 4wd, use full time. this will allow you extra traction when you enter the drift/slick spot while running care-free on the dry stuff. this does not however, mean you can get away with entering said slick spot at 60 mph! if you do, hold on baby! don't turn! and don't hit the break! ride it out...
in part time- you get something like 48% to front/52% to back, locked as such. this is the same case put in many chero sports in the late 90's, good equipment. if you know you need 4wd, this is good. if it's solid ice, snow, mud, with no dry patches [or very short dry patches], this is what you might want.
and of course 4-lo. if you aint stuck, or about to get stuck, or climbing, or descending, you probably don't need it. this should also better engage your 'tru-trac' rear diff. this one will really bind up your axels and such on dry. if you hear a big "POP", get the hell out of it!
if you don't have the full and part time options, then you only have part time 4wd, and can safely use all the above except the 1st option. you'll get away with running your part time as in the first example most of the time, but if you do it a lot, eventually it will get you...
i was led to believe that this t-case was only offered in the renegade packages, particularly in '03. maybe not so in other years???
