Did you find your guinea pig for the bumper? I'm over here in Durango but could be over there no problem....

(EDIT: finally read through some pages and answered my own question... need a CRD guinea pig? )

Obviously voids the tranny warantee by applying too much weight and good looks to the front of the KJ.

Unfortunately, that is not a surprise, the trany/TC is one of the reasons why I traded my CRD for a gasser. And let me tell you, Trading the CRD was very hard to do because I’m a diesel guru through and through!

Well so far they have not said that I figured they would have voided it due to the tranny temp sender I installed though. So far they are being resonable although it will get the F37 now that sucks.

The ARB is right around 100, well, it was for my Nissan. Is this bumper safe airbag wise like the ARB. Not busting bubbles, as I plan on buying one soon, but just curious to see if anyone has looked into this.

This was the topic of a very heated series of posts a while back. People could not understand why it was important to have an "Air Bag Compliant" after market bumper.

Franckly I hope they never get the chance to find out why.

Simply put, having a NON-Airbag Compliant system puts your personal insurance coverage at risk in the event of a claim.

Not sure if there are safety issues at play here also, there may be, but it MIGHT give your insurance company grounds to deny coverage since it was not tested and not compliant.

The ARB bull bar is tested in order to be imported and it still may cause issues with SOME insurance companies. BUT if you have a rigid piece of steel on the front of your vehicle, then you have completley compormised or even eliminated the "Crumple Zones" the manufacturers have designed into the air bag deployment system.

The end result is that air bag deployment may happen at lower speeds and relitivily minor colisions. Then you get to try and have your insurance replace the airbag and they say "Sorry about your luck"

Air bags are expensive.

I love RL's bumper and this one here, but the fact is they are not air bag compliant like My arb is.

thats not completely true I hit a deer w/ mine going 45-50 and it did not set off my air bags, which is prolly why you said MAY but ill take my chances but i will say that had I of hit the deer w/ my stock bumper that I would be looking at alot of money to have the stupid plastic replaced and now days cars from the factory have weakers bumper than the used to and b/c of that when you do get in a wreck it will cost more money to have it repaired

The difference is that deer tend to absorb alot of the impact, that explains the splatter of blood and the furr flying all over the place. IF that had been bigger like an elk or another vehicle, then the impact absorption would have been VERY different. But you are right it is only a possibility. One your Insurance company would love to exploit.

I have an ARB bumper and I expect to get into a pissing match if and or when I ever have a situation. BUT that is the choice I made.

I was in a Head on back in 1996. Some kid racing his cousin and passing him on a hill hit me in my lane (he was driving a Geo Metro, explains why I am not dead) My 96 cherokee was recalled for the airbags prior to this accident.

The combined speed of impact was OVER 130 mph. My air bag DID NOT DEPLOY!. My insurance company said it was IN PART due to the recall and ALSO the SMITTYBUILT BRUSH GUARD on the front of my XJ. Said it messed up the air bag crumple zones. BULL doo doo WE ALL KNOW. BUT they said sorry.

Thank god I was on the job and workers comp. Anyway my insurance covered my property damage and other stuff, but they would not work with me in persuing a claim against DC about the airbags.

Just be careful. The bumpers here are cool and will protect your KJ. BUT they can also, MAYBE, put your insurance claims at risk. They (the insurance companies) have the final word.

Thats all i said, you make your choice and be happy with it

BUT be prepared for when or if that day comes when you are in a collision with another vehicle and their insuance company says the damage and injuries were WORSE because of your home made all steel bumper. Or you company says sorry bout that, but your home made jobber bent the frame, if it wasn't there the crumple zones would have done their job.

I am not an automotive engineer. I have had experience in dealing with the insurance companies.

Like State farm denying inland wind damage after huricane katrina saying it was not covered under the home owners because it was flood related. when it was well inland from the storm surge and only water was rain.

They are @$#%s and WILL deny coverage if you give them the chance.

all I am saying. enjoy your bumpers, I do, just don't be suiprsed...

I think you're both right. :)

But any time you mod your Jeep, you're giving up something. I lost 3-4 mpg when I lifted my KJ, and then another 1 mpg when I put a rack on top. I also voided any warranty on suspension and steering parts, and altered the way it handles at highway speeds.

Replacing my stock tires with BFG MTs reduced my fuel economy even further, and now I have a rough, loud ride.

Now, I'm installing a heavy bumper, so I'll have to rebuild my front suspension (new Frankenlift--close to $1,200 installed), I'll probably lose even more fuel economy, and I don't expect that my airbags will behave exactly the same as they would with a stock bumper. But I imagine that in a low-speed collision, I'll drive away with less (or no) damage.

Isn't this all about making choices about the vehicle you want to drive? If my primary concerns were fuel economy, warranty, and safety, I'd be driving a Volvo!
