For most people, it's not so much the final purchase price, but what comes out of their budget on a monthly basis - ie, the car payment and how often they have to visit the gas station.

Previous vehicle - 04 Dodge Dakota - $350/month payment and $200/month gas.

CRD - $230/month payment and $100/month diesel.

Yeah, in my case it was a no-brainer - win/win on both sides of the coin. But I can easily see why people would pay the higher purchase price and monthly payment for a diesel, if when you factor in fuel costs they end up shelling out less money each month for the same type vehicle.

Congrats on the win... I'm sure it was a pretty frustrating experience for you and your family, but victory is pretty sweet!

To comment on the "blame the government" argument above... for the last decade up until 06, in every state save the handful under CARB rules, you could drive down to the VW and Mercedes dealership of your choice and buy yourself a diesel passenger car. You could drive down to the truck dealership of your choice and buy a big, high dollar tow rig.

It was the auto industry that decided not to offer mid-sized diesel engines in trucks and SUV's. Didn't fit the business paradigm, which assumed customers would never care about fuel economy, and diesel engines should be marketed as a high end option on very, very expensive rigs, not engines for the mainstream.

You can see the result of that today, with the Grand Cherokee CRD option only offered in the US on the most expensive models (though they are finally buying a clue and trying to offer it in slightly less ridiculously expensive models now). The new pollution regs set a high bar, and companies chose to complain about it rather than innovate, hoping they would get dropped. Whatever you think of the EPA's enforcement of the Clean Air Act, regs will get tougher and tougher as time gets on. Whining about it achieves nothing. Innovation results in cleaner air and a model line up that people will want to buy as fuel prices increase.

Congrats!

DC (excuse me, C) needs to do a lot in the customer satisfaction and customer retention department. They should NEVER have let this get to court. A smart company would have saved a TON of money and KEPT YOU IN a JEEP by just GIVING you a new Jeep in trade. Now they are out a customer (or more) and a lot more money in lawyers and straight pay-out.

My, I'm waiting for a Chevy Volt. Imagine all the things that could go wrong on THAT "experimental run "car. Weeee!

Glad you got the outcome you were looking for.

I've had a few issues with my CRD, but thanks to an excellent dealer and this site, I've managed to get them fixed.

When the warranty is out, I'll do the "real" fixes and just keep on driving. :)

Lawyers won as usual :( I would guess the lawyers advised them to not set any presidents by buying back vehicles without a fight :( Too bad for them and the American way

9 pages of engineer's designed lamb rack but finally we got some sweet lemoneade: glad for you!
Any chance we may gain access to an official statement for future use (scan copy?) for those of us who may be interested? I understand it's a Canadian judgment but I'm sure it has strong value!
