CRD died 10 times on the interstate yesterday during a 178 mile trip. 1st 2 times slowly (20 seconds) starved of fuel and quit. Rest of the times she shut off boom like you pulled the fuel shut off on a tractor.

Got a code 2nd time, but light eventually went off. Fuel system leak - large, was the translation (0093 maybe, was dark @ autostore etc).

Put fuel additive in 1/2 way through the trip and she was still dong it 10 miles from home. It is definately under load conditions that make it happen. ie, giv'n her hell or pulling an interstate hill @80 are sure fire ways to do it.

I am sitting in the airport waiting to fly to Mexico so nothing to do until next week..

Food for thought for yall and hopefully Ill get some insight before I go into the DCX.

Also, I had a significant loss of fuel mileage for the last 6-8 tanks.

Merry Christmas Gents!!!

Change your fuel filter first off.

Good idea - if it wasn't sitting for a spell while you're gone, first would have been to test it by pumping the primer, noting how many pumps it took to firm up, see how much air is in the head, also noting any leaks around the fuel heater as pressure increased.

The '98-'02 VP44 would fail due to reduced fuel volume as lift pump died, even tho there was enuff volume for injection and engine would contiue running - CP3 simply stops injecting as volume drops, no harm done.

CP3 lubricates itself first and foremost - even if not enuff fuel to develop injection pressure, the lift pump is still lubricating the high-pressure pump and internals, but engine will die.

Doesn't mean CP3 cannot die - just that the probability is way less - correct the current fuel supply problem(s) and it should give many years of service

The filter heads are weak and will start sucking air if the filter starts plugging up.

Change filter first and if it still does it take it in for a new filter housing. This would be a good time to use an O.E. filter.
(dont know how nice your local dealer is-mine has been great.)
