Yesterday I had to pull over to the side of the road to check something and pull on top of some hard packed icy snow. I was in 2wd and got stuck for a bit and when I got out I noticed that the ABS light and the PARK brake light came on the dash.

I didn’t really pay attention to the RPM or speedo but I didn’t give it much gas at all, maybe I got to 2,500 RPMs max but only for a second. I just rocked the jeep back and forth maybe 2 or 3 times and didn’t need to make abrupt changes from D to R and once I was out I noticed the ABS and BRAKE lights came on the dash. I got impatient and after maybe 30 seconds or about 200 yrds I pulled over again (no snow this time) and shut the car down for about a minute. When I started her back up the same lights came on and stayed on. I drove some more and they went off on their own after about a minuet and maybe a ¼ mile later.

The E brake was not on and I never pressed the brake. I have a 2004 Limited with the Select-track (full time) but like I said, I was in 2wd and never put it in 4wd. I do not have ESP. I have around 34,000 miles. This weekend I just changed the oil and the transmission fliud.

If I had ESP the ABS light would make sense but I have no idea why this happened. Thoughts?

Are the lights still on? If so, get someone or the dealer to look at the fault codes.

Mine did something similar, found that my Brake fluid was very low. When I filled up the light went away! Also noticed some brake fluid around the drivers side front, had to tighten up the connections a bit. Maybe something to check.

you need a hub assembly, most likely. The tone ring on the hub assembly measures wheel speed for the ABS system, and if it reads wrong because of slop in the bearings, then you'll have the ABS light, and maybe the brake light. Also, ice/snow might be packed up in the tone ring.

Check the fluid first, though, scooby's problem could cause the same thing...but if your brake fluid is low, there may be a bigger issue.

Yes the lights are all off now and they haven’t come back on since. When they went off I drove another 20 miles before the end of that trip. Today 26 miles, dry in the am and 48 degrees and rain in the PM.

Thunderbird – are you saying I need a hub assembly or some else further up this post? I just had the oil changed and they check everything so I don’t think anything is low but I’ll check it myself.

you MAY need a hub assembly, but it's possible there was snow/ice packed around the tone ring on the hub assembly preventing the sensor from reading wheel speed, thus giving you an ABS and/or brake light.

There definitely wasn’t snow packed around anything. I haven’t driven in snow deeper than 3” and after that the temps were warm enough to melt anything on the Jeep. The day this happened everything was frozen solid with a layer of ice above the snow.

How much is a Hub Assembly? Is there a lot of labor involved (I’ll bring it in but want an idea on time.) Should that be covered under warranty (I bought the extended 6yr,60,000 miles)

The only time it happened was with the wheel spin in the snow. I have had the ABS kick in many times when stopping short and it’s never been a problem and the light never came on. Does anyone else think it’s the Hub Assembly?

If the lights off now I would not worry about it. Run it till it happens again, if it ever does again. With all this computer CRAP they have on them youre going to get some strange things show up then go away a short time later. I think all this stuff is making people more parinoid about driving than helping them! So glad I dont have it.....................
