I know of one owner that e-mailed VM Motori, asking about the recommended types of oils for this engine.
He said the answer he got back was that on the marine version of this engine, WITHOUT an EGR, the recommended oil was 10W40 CF rated.
If you dig up the service info on Cat, Cummins, and Detroit Diesel OTR engines, according to them CF rated oil is good for nothing but bulldozers and generators - strictly off-road use in older precombustion chamber indirect injection non-EGR non-CCV type diesels. In their service info, Cat all but says they'll void your engine warranty on the spot if they catch you using a CF rated oil in one of their OTR engines.
The more recent oil ratings such as CI-4 and later were developed with direct injection, EGR, and closed CCV in mind, in particular when combined with the comparitively low grade diesel fuel we have in this country - to handle the increased amount of soot loading from the EGR and lower volatility to decrease the amount of oil fumes being sucked thru your CCV and into your air intake.
In Europe, they have higher quality fuel, and a lower EGR duty cycle due to different emissions regs - all of which contribute to lower soot loading and acid buildup in the oil.
Running the ORM/SEGR full time is definitely going to improve matters if you're running CF rated oil.
Oil types and ratings are like religion and guaranteed to start arguments. Best I can say is, while 0W40 CF rated is what DC specs, like many other items on this beast - torque converter, Provent, fuel filter, lift pump - where we've found that we can do DC one better, running a CI-4 or higher rated oil is only going to be an improvement and IMHO is a good way to CYA for the type of engine we have.
