An interesting comparison of air filters, media,etc. Now the Amsoil AE wasn't tested...just the older generation of Amsoil. Results seem to have been disapointing and that paper still seems the best for filtration.

I went through various websites looking for the cleaning regime of the Amsoil AE without success. Lots of comment on "Easy to Clean" but no specifics.

You read, you decide.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest3.htm

Personally, I will never go back to the oiled type filter....just a pain in the butt for marginal (if any) performace gain and possible substandard filtration. Until I read good independant (NOTE: Independant) reviews of new filtration media, it stays in the trash can of hype. As with all "cleanable" filters you problably need to carry the old reliable as a spare for that time when the filter needs to be replaced on a trip. At least with paper filters you can usually knock them on a tree and get enough crud out to keep on truckin'.

Remeber the ash from Mt. St Helens....I had a '79 Olds diesel and when driving through had to stop every hundred miles or and empty ash out of the stock filter. There was actually a shortage of air filters in the area.

There's two posts above telling you where to find cleaning instructions and they are not oiled :lol: Since you couldn't find it I'll tell you what they say :wink: You can vacuum it out or blow it out with compressed air at 20 psi and at a 45 deree angle every 25k miles.

Yes I remember Mt St Helens but I was not there. I also remember K&N avertising their filters were the only ones that didn't clog :shock: I wonder where the ash went :roll: :?

I'm thinking I might try the brush attachment on my shopvac on the dirty side first (bristles should loosen things up in the pleats), then hit it with compressed air from the clean side to see if I got everything.

I use Napa Gold filters (paper, made by Wix, more pleats than Mopar). Cheap and no issues.

On my first post I wrote about my NAPA gold. Yes it has 1/3rd more surface area then a Purolator but at only 6k miles even it was full of fine dirt and restricting air flow. A new filter gave my crd new found off the line power :D :lol: A diesel engine requires much more air then a gasser :wink:

I found an Amsoil dealer presentation about the AE air filters on the web. Very impressive check it out if you can find it. Of course it was an attempt to pump up the troops but never-the-less the filters look good for what I want from an air filter. I'll be changing to this filter for both my TDI and CRD.

I've ordered a Amsoil filter and wondering what the general thinking is on a filter minder :?: And for those using them do you have the push in or screw in type?
Here's a link :wink:
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s ... ter+minder
If it didn't work go here and search on filter minder.

I have a push-in filter minder on mine. Ordered it directly from the company that makes it. Cheaper than buying it from any outlet. 2 of them delivered was like $47. Easy to install, just drill hole, put in.

Interesting product, seems like a good idea. How long have you used it? Since you ordered two have you noticed any difference in a CRD vs other vehicle? Where did you mount it? Does it disturb/lessen air flow?Does it seal enough to not have an air leak? Do you just 'calibrate' it by starting with a new filter and the minder tells when the air flow has been reduces some %?

It's just a vacuum guage, calibrated in inches of water "H2O rather than inches murcury "HG - 27"H2O = 2"HG = 1psi - measures the resistance to airfow thru the filter, which resistance can be measured as vacuum - thus, it is not vehicle dependent - I pulled the one in our KJ outta the crunched airbox from an '06 Dodge 5.9L Cummins - that one has a much bigger filter, as you may well imagine, but 27"H2O is 27"H2O in any size box.

Hit yer local boneyard - most modern contrivances residing therein should have one - most are push-in with a rubber grommet

When I called Filter Minder Co., I told them I have the 2.8L CRD and 1.9L TDi and they recommended the proper size which is the same for both vehicles. The indicator on the Passat has advanced further the than one on the Liberty, but it also has more miles on its filter and I drive (don't drive it at this time do to some head/piston damage) to work past some old coal mines. I figure this is a pretty accurate way to know when to change the air filter. No leaking of air past the push-in grommet type that I have thats been noticed. :evil:

Regarding the EAA filter from Amsoil.... I have 30K on my engine and have done an oil analysis at every change. I've been running strictly the EAA filter for the last 6K and when the report came back, my silicon levels were dramatically reduced:

6K =22 (OEM filter)
12K= 17 (Wix filter)
18K = 14 (Wix+ gasser air box)
23K= 10 (Wix for 2K then EAA )
30K= 8 (EAA)

That is a pretty big difference with the EAA...much less upper end wear with low Si numbers like that...

Nice. Looking froward to future readings. For S's & G's, how about popping a Wix back in to see how or if it changes?
