Anybody had any luck getting the OEM battery replaced under warranty? I think mine is on its way out. Cranking speed seems down in this cold weather and starting is affected.

My CRD was a leftover 05 and had a Mopar spiral cell AGM battery in it when I bought it. Sounds like it should have had an Optima Red top from the factory based on what people here have said.

The Mopar is rated at 700 something CCA. In my experience this is marginal for a 2.8 liter diesel when it gets cold. Between the Jeep and another vehicle, spiral cell AGM batteries have been a disappointment for me anyway. I do like the fact that they don't need water or give off large amounts of corrosive gas, but that is about it for me.

I have been eyeing the Die Hard platinum batteries. They are AGM, but not spiral cell. Higher CCA and price than Optima. If I could shoehorn a group size 65 in, I'd have 900 something CCA. At about 1 inch longer than the group 34 the CRD came with, I'm afraid the group 65 just won't go.

Got my '06 in November '05 with a 34 Red Top and it is going strong. In fact, I left the map light on last night. I think it turns off automatically after a fashion but if it did stay on all night it didn't hurt my startup this morning.

Cowcatcher,

If you get a chance, could you check and post the CCA of your battery?

It does turn off after about 10 mins, VERY annoying.

Specs from the Optima site:

Quote:
Part Number: 34R (9003-151)
RedTop®; Battery; Group 34R; Cold Crank Amps 800; Crank Amps 1000; Reserve Capacity 110; Ampere Hour 50; Top Terminal; L-10 in.; W-6 7/8 in.; H-7 13/16 in.; BOXED

There was a time when Jeep was having problems with Optimas and if they failed they were replacing them with MOPAR. Personally I think some of the battery problems were related to the later BCM programing issue that caused the recall for some for the BCM reprogram. That may be how you ended up with a MOPAR. The Red Top has a 3 year free replacement warranty.

Thanks Cowcatcher,

My Mopar is marked 770 CCA. I may need to dig through my warranty papers to see about the battery warranty. I'm under 36K and 2 years of ownership. I suspect I got a Mopar due to the amount of time my Jeep sat on the lot.
