Has anyone fitted a magnaflow 15870 to a crd ,and if so did it fit well and sound ok?. i'm asking before i contact a supplier in uk and enquire of availability price ect as they list it for petrol engines only but i seem to remember reading that exhaust systems are the same cat back.

I don't think the type of muffler makes a big difference in sound on our vehicles because of the turbo and catalyst already in the exaust stream. I'd get whatever straight-through is cheap. I have a glasspack.

I put the magnaflow kit on my crd and it sounds slightly better than before. I love the tip in the back. It took about 20 minutes in the driveway to install.

I tried a Cherry Bomb first and mpg/performance suffered. Now I have a 3" catback with no muffler and it sounds and works great. Save the money and just build a 3"...if it is too loud for ya' then add a muffler.

Look into the inlet and outlet ends of the muffler - the internal thru-pipe should be the same diameter as the external pipe, at the inlet and the outlet - 'nuther words, if 3" pipe, the muffler should be 3" all the way thru - when they cut the oem KJ muffler off, compare the oem inlet to the muffler of your choice to see what you don't want to install

Sorry for my ignorance but whats a glass pack? i've never heard that expression before. I,m not too bothered about the sound being the same with the magnaflow i just want something that fits with minimum fuss and no knocking or bracket fabricating to worry about. Are there any other manufactures that do a straight replacement similar to the magnaflow?

A Glass pack is basically a round outter shell with a round inner shell with perferations in it with no baffles or other restrictions. The space between them is "packed with fiber glass". It's a stright through contruction and has very little back pressure. Most are/were red with a woodpecker decal on it to make it faster  A example is what Triumph Motor Cycles used to use on there bikes back when Triumph was a real Triumph  On a non turbo gasoline car you get a louder low pitched rumbling exhaust sound :D

Here's a cut away view.

the shop that cut out the stock can and welded in the magnaflow on mine had three sizes for the same price, 24", 18", 12". I opted for the 18", but the only sound difference I can tell is a bit more rumble at idle, a bit more turbo at cruise. spool-up is faster by the seat of my pants dyno, and I have read here that EGT's are around 100-150 degrees F less.

If I had it to do over again, I would use the 12", the turbo breaks up the sound (exhaust pulses) really well already. somewhere in the list of threads, (6+ months ago ?) is a wav file from a guy who ran a straight pipe that sounded good, not over loud at all.

Nice clips. Seems like it speaks with authourity at the pipes and with the door open but not too bad on the accell runs. Do you have enough miles on the system to get a feel for any MPG change. Also, does it coast any better? Mile feels like it has an exhaust brake when going downhill at 65-75.

Hopefully I can get started on it tomorrow. My girlfriend bought a TDi Beetle today and I think she wants to go on a drive tomorrow. :? I'm tempted to leave the muffler off and try the straight pipe (I have no cat) but I'll probably leave the muffler on.

It definitely spools up better (you can hear the turbo)..coasts just fine with 44psi tire pressure. I don't think it hurt mpg in any way...and I won't have to get a muffler any day soon. Mid Range feels much better.

That's good to hear. I liked the performance of the 3" straight pipe exhaust I had, but I couldn't stand the sound.

I finally found time to put the 3" exhaust on. It looks nicer than the side exit exhaust. I haven't noticed any loss of power and the sound in the cab is quieter.

Lsss exhaust noise, quieter cabin often gives the effect of improved power, same as replacing rotted-out exhaust system....................

After I did this myself (about $10)... I checked with the guys at Midas and they said they'd do it for $30-$40.... can't beat the price and it runs/sounds great. Cheapest way to get rid of the factory "exhaust brake" IMHO.

I also did a 3" straight pipe with no muffler.
It is a little louder, and you can definitely hear the turbo more.
