Well thats really my point, I don't think most people would care about the nav/radio/etc, those types of features can be done both better and cheaper aftermarket(already put an Alpine stereo in mine with a bluetooth capable PDA that runs GPS for me). But the other ones you mention, like heated mirrors, steering audio and others may be able to be done fairly cheap, I know for a fact that I couldn't have added steering wheel audio controls for the ~$75 these parts would cost, there was no specific cost on it as it required the premium sound group, which I had no interest in(and it was several hundred dollars for a sound system I would have replaced with my own, which meant the cost was just for the darn buttons in my case). Being able to add just the buttons for less than a hundred bucks is a pretty fair deal and a neat project. I'm wondering what other projects could be done that cheap/easy.

Uh, if you have an after market HU then these buttons wont do you any good.

Actually the Alpine harness has the ability to utilize wheel mounted stereo controls. Its mentioned in the manual and the wire harness has wires labeled specifically for it. Unless there is something highly proprietary about Jeep's implementation I don't see why it wouldn't work...

Edit: Just checked, I'd simply have to add one of these to make it work: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-lEPgsGn9Jk ... 127SWIJACK

At least in europe the CRDs come with steel wheel options. I think they still do today.

Ya, like the CRDs in the WK I think most of ours were a little more upscale.

I could have ordered it that way - it was all listed out but I had to have cruise. It just made sence for comfort group "c".

Not sure who else special ordered thiers , but my guess is that all off the lot cars were dealer ordered with group "c" just because it made monitary sence. No dealer wants a $23K vehicle with out cruise on thier lot. But I am sure they are out there.

I believe that some of the gasser base models came with steel wheels. While driving around in TX with my friend, on one occasion we passed by a gasser KJ and he commented that it must be a base model because it had steel wheels.

As far as the seats - I wouldn't want to switch over to the leather seats, but would be interested in seeing if you could take the hardware from underneath a power seat and converting the stock Sport cloth covered seats to power operation. Digging around a little in the parts catalog and exploded drawings, it looks as if this would be possible.

If nothing else, I'd love to take the seats from my friends '08 Wrangler Unlimited and put them in the CRD - way more comfortable, manual height adjust, etc - no power operation, but a much better seat IMHO than the stock Sport seat.

I did the same, factory order CRD sport with C package, tow group and skid plates. I couldn't find one at any dealer without a sunroof (i hate those thing).

IIRC they came standard with alloy wheels, EVIC was not an option, you could only get it with Limited package.

Its odd because I have noticed that there are far more CRDs without sun roofs than with(even in limited's). Also CATCRD has a sport, and his has an EVIC.

OK, after a great read on this post I decided to do it. HOWEVER, I have an 06 CRD and there is a minor variation. Our harness has TWO plugs that go into the spring ring. The others have one plug. Our part number is 52029381AA for the 06-07 KJ wiring harness with cruise and radio control.

Just an FYI.

I'll add to this post since I'm a new CRD owner.

If you want to integrate an aftermarket radio with the original steering wheel controls, one option that I had success with is a signal converter from Metra Electronics called Axxess Interface model ASWC.

This gadget works great and is fully programmable so you can modify the steering wheel button functions based on commands your radio will accept. Downloadable instructions explain the details.

I also installed the radio controls, but now my cruise control doesn't work. Any thoughts?
