A/C Compressor failure AGAIN!!!!

Is there such a thing as a liberty with no AC? My second ac compressor is screaming again and i'm tired of putting $1200 compressors on it every 6 months. I was wondering if there was a pully i could buy to replace the compressor until i have a extra $1200 laying around. Hope someone can help....

How did you possibly spend $1200 on a A/C compressor? How many miles are on the Jeep? Are you 100% sure its the compressor?

You can get compressors for under $300. Heck, I think we paid around $150 for a new one. Installed it and had it filled with freon for under $50.

Ive never heard or seen a liberty without A/C.

when i pop the hood on mine it shows to pics... with ac and one without ac..
i have just the bar bone libby.. i have driveing lights stock and tinting windows that it..

Brand new compressors are about that much(from a dealer),you can get remanufactured ones for a few hundred $$$$.

$150 for a "brand new" compressor is hard to believe unless bought it second hand or off stealbay,heck you can't even get a brand new one from any parts stores like Napa or Checkers(online dealer parts places like trademotion deal straight with the manufacture).

Oh and they do make KJ's without A/C but it was pretty standard so it may had to been custom ordered that way.

its a 2003 Liberty Renegade 5 Speed. I had the AC done at Chrysler each time. I know its the AC Compressor. the bearings are gone AGAIN and its knocking like someone is hitting it with a hammer. You can actually feel it when u touch the unit.

Its on a ZJ tjkj so it may be cheaper on one of those. Thats all we paid for a new one though. I know its new as a guy we know really well got it for us.

Perhaps your serpentine belt is too tight and it's bending the A/C shaft causing it to eat bearings?

I was thinking the same thing but the KJ has the auto tensioner. Idk if one of those can go bad and actually make the belt to tight or not?

True, true - didn't think of that. Perhaps the mounting frame is warped? I'm grasping at straws.

Bad tensioner would release belt tension not make it tighter

An improperly replaced tensioner (there were 3 different types around that time back in 2003) would probably chew up the belts

My advice would be to take the Jeep back to the dealer that replaced the Compressor and ask them nicely to warranty the repair they made. Parts are covered up to 1 year so they might help cut you some slack if you are over that limit. If not, find a mom and pop shop in your area that can replace the Compressor with a less expensive remanufactured one.

Depending on what failed on the compressor the drier/accumulater should also be replaced, also the system should be flushed out and the correct amount of pag 46 oil should be added,The amount of oil to be added is determined on what you get out of the existing compressor, I've seen many failures due to improper installs.

took the clutch assembly off this morning and found that it was the bearing in the cluch. The compressor is fine

Got the ruined bearing out and ordered an aftermarket one today. $69.30 and a few hours of my time and works GREAT!!!! Thanku everyone who reply'd

Glad to hear you went into bearings. Those will wear down and will need to be replaced at some point in time. Idler pulleys and all other bearings on the serpentine belt will need changing at some point. I'm fearing mine will be needing to be replaced in the not so distant future.

A/C compressors should last long (at least they should last 10 years imo, but I have no experience with that).

well, my compressor ( bearings ) failed this morning on the way to work.
started making a serious screaming noise, then it threw the belt, so i started overheating and the battery light came on. :shock:

luckily i got into work parking lot as i was overheating.

it'll be in the shop tomorrow to see what the issue is.

50k miles on the darn thing and this happens.
