Ok.......so I'm about due for an oil change (always do it myself - unless it's too cold) and I check the dipstick and the color is not too bad and then I open the oil fil cap for some reason(?) and it is ALL SLIMED UP WITH YELLOW CRUD...........Geeeeeez. I always change my own oil and it was never like that before.....I even took the splash guard out of the filler neck and it was the same below it...........DOUBLE SLIMED.............

On here somewhere there was a thread on it I think, but my search finger is retarded and I keep getting 3,000 post topics.

Anyone know where it is??????

What oil do you use and how often do you use it? Do you do alot of short driving? Live in a humid area?

Blake.....I use Mobil 1 5w30 up until the last oil change, then Pennzoil syn because it was on sale. All long trips over 10 miles. (It's 15 miles to a decent store.) The syn has 3.400 or so miles on it. It's cold as all get out in upstate NY in the winter. The only thing I can think of is that it sat in the garage for a month while I was away. I'm changing it this weekend unless it is too cold and then I have to take it up the street to the garage and let Rick do it. This is the first I have had this problem.

There is a thread on here somewhere abnout this and I can't find it. I wanted to read it over.

This has been discussed a lot before seems it happens more during cold weather, mine did it a couple of times between oil changes when I drove 8 miles one way to work the last two winters, this year it hasnt done it at all.

I'm not sure which thread you're referring to but, I've worked in an engine shop rebuilding engines. One thing I noticed in a VERY short time was that the guys who swore by Pennzoil ALWAYS had an excessive amount of carbon build-up. Hence, I suggest using Mobil1 or Amsoil. Sales on cheaper crap do not sway me when it comes to oil after that job. Yes, they do make THAT much difference. Pennzoil just doesn't seem to be filtered as well as just about ANY other oil.

However, yellow or green foam generally indicates moisture in the oil. :? :( I hope you don't have something cracked. Maybe call a few engine shops and see if you can find one that will do a compression test for cheap?

tommudd.......yea, I looked for a thread on it and couldn't find it. I just wanted to read it.

dje ryu.....yea, I am going to clean out the filler neck and change the oil tomorrow morning I think and see what it looks like. I think I am going back to Mobil 1. I do NOT do any short trips ever - and that's what supposedly causes it - BUT apparently not. Something elce caused it. It might have been the Pennzoil synthetic that was crap. I will know for sure after I change it and get a few miles on it and get it back on Mobil 1.

I'd look for bubbles in the radiator when the engine is idling. Sometimes when the oil filler cap is creamed the head /gasket is leaking. This is not necessarily the only cause!

In extreme cold weather make sure that the engine gets good and warm and then runs warm long enough to evaporate out any excess moisture from condensation. I use to see this all the time whenI lived in northern Minnesota.

Its normal in cold weather. I wouldn't suspect a blown head gasket or cracked block/cylinder head unless I saw that on the dipstick.

Change your PCV valve.

Difference on what? Your wallet or who pays the warranty? lol:

Probably just the cold weather and maybe short journeys were the engine hasnt warmed up to operating temp for long enough and hasnt evaporated any moisture ,Kinda looks a bit like dirty mayonaise.

Ok, so I cleaned out the oil filler neck real good. (I took out the splash guard and cleaned it all the way to the bottom of the oil filler neck). Put in 5 qts of Mobil 1 5w30 and changed the pcv valve. The pcv valve seemed ok but had a very little bit of condensation on it.

I'll start checking it more often. We'll see what happens.

I had started a thread on it last season. My fill cap seems to get this yellowish white stuff when it is really cold out. Basically it is crank case vapors that is condensing on the fill cap. I replaced my PCV valve, but it did not help.

At first I thought I was leaking anti freeze into the oil, but then found my lower radiator hose was leaking. After replacing the hoses, I wasn't loosing anti freeze any more, but still get the sludge in the fill cap.

When it is cold, I open it every couple of weeks and wipe it out.

Out of curiosity, what type of air filter do you use? I use a cold air intake that I got off e-Bay but replaced the filter with a 6x9 K&N.

Mine has done it since new every winter, just a little condensation, nothing to worry about, just forming in the highest point in the system, soon as it warms up clean it out and its done until next cold spell, pretty soon with Global warming we wont have to worry about it at all!

Phew - glad to hear this is normal for really cold weather - I would so hate to see a fellow KJ'er lose his head/gasket

For my own sake I'm glad too, the first thing I would have suspected if it were my own KJ was a leaky head/gasket (since this happened to me with my patrol once).

Ahh nothing like a good cheap solution to a well-known problem :D

Yea, I couldn't find the thread. I thought there was one on here somewhere.

I will be checking once a week or so from now on.. It's just that I always change my oil and have never seen it before up close......yuk.

I am using a Fram air filter (I wouldn't use their oil filters). Prior to that I had an OEM air filter. Just that the Dealer charges around $18. for them........so I switched to a Fram because it was convenient at the time. When I put it in I checked it over and it looked comparable to the OEM one......You think the Fram air filter is somehow contributing to it?? I never had the problem when the OEM air filter was in.......probably made out of toilet paper or something. I shoulda known better.

has nothing to do with the air filter, it's got everything to do with moisture inside the crankcase. mine does it every year when it starts to get cold...and after that, it's not an issue until the next November or so.

I was guessing that it may have been my K&N letting in to much moist air. So I was interested in what you were using. I would think that your FRAM air filter would be very similar to the OEM filter.

Air filter doesnt have anything to do with it.

Even if it did, I have the K&N and Ive never seen sludge in my oil filler neck. Ive used Mobil one SYN since day one.
