I don't think I recall any posts about broken rear axles. Anyone else?

I'm getting ready to install an ARB and was just trying to decide if upgrading the rear axles is worth it. I'm thinking my money could be used better elsewhere, but just wanted to check.

I blew a front diff, a rear right axle and a powetrax locker in about 1.5 sec. The Jeep was climbing a ledge at about a 35* to 40* angle when the front grenaded on a wheel hop, dropping the load/weight of the Jeep to the rear where it then snapped the axle impeding the revolution of the powertrax and then grenading that. So, it can be done. Maybe not easily but it can be done. Lesson: hubris will get you nowhere. And thanks to everyone involved who helped me get home. That means you, Dan and Mike.

YOu forgot to mention that the turbo was IN when that happened. All I remember was hearing that thing spool up and then KABOOM! That was one of my most memorable trips.

Okay so no hill climb offroading in the KJ if you want your axles to live??

Dang that was some of the funniest things I did in my Patrol!

Wow, whats the odds  Did you replace the powertrax or go with a different locker?

I twisted the splines on both my rears before I changed to the Yukon's. The ARB wasn't impressed, but the splines twisted right at the carrier. witch to get out, that was for sure.

But I tend to drive like Dave, too... to my knowledge, we're the only 2. I did a little WA State It's-wet-we-got-no-traction-up-here hop move and tweaked both of them at the same time. Not good times...used to do it all the time in a TJ, but the weight of the KJ's arse end dropping down on itself was more than it wanted to deal with... my fault... but it sure looked cool at the time ;)

The New Dodge does not have the same issues, got some good air time in it already... I'll put a shot or three up of it when it's done.. you guys won't mind, right?

That's why I switched to the Yukon rear axles when I went to 4.10's and the ARB in the rear, didn't want to chance busting a OEM axle.Lockers place alot of stress on the axles, and being only 29 spline, and the weight of my KJ I needed all the strength I could get. Can't what for those 35 spline axles in my new rear axle, should never break those, should but still can happen.

OK, You've convinced me. might as well do them while I've got it apart.
I found them at Randy's ring and Pinion for about $140 a piece. Anyone know of a better source?

Troy,

I'll buy your Yukons from you when you begin the SFA convert on the rear. I'm getting the 4.10's.

It will be good piece of mind knowing they are there. I did not replace the Powertrax, but put the stock LSD back in for now and will get e-locker or ARB with an axle swap.
